India is poised to increase petrol and diesel prices, marking the first rise in nearly four years. The decision hinges on global crude oil trends.

If approved, this would mark the first increase in petrol and diesel prices in nearly four years. The potential hike could be around Rs 4–5 per litre. Domestic LPG cylinders may also see an increase of Rs 40–50.

Retail fuel prices have been frozen since 2022. State-owned fuel retailers are facing losses of about Rs 20 per litre on petrol and Rs 100 per litre on diesel. This situation has prompted oil marketing companies to absorb these losses.

The increase is driven by a sharp rise in global crude oil prices due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Government sources stated, “The government is closely monitoring the evolving situation in West Asia and its impact on global energy markets.” The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that retail pump prices have remained unchanged.

The government is expected to make a decision on the price hike within the next 5–7 days. No final decision has been announced yet regarding the price hike.

Petrol and diesel prices may see a significant hike immediately after the elections, with an expected increase of ₹25 to ₹28 per litre. This change is anticipated due to shifts in government policy following the electoral results.

The current expectation is that fuel costs will stabilize before the elections. However, analysts predict a rapid increase once the new government is in place.

Expected price changes:

Petrol prices expected to rise by ₹25 per litre and Diesel prices expected to rise by ₹28 per litre.

This potential hike will impact consumers and businesses alike. Higher fuel costs could lead to increased transportation expenses across various sectors.

Experts suggest that these changes reflect broader economic policies that the new government may implement. The adjustment in fuel pricing often correlates with shifts in taxation and subsidies.

The recent ₹10 increase in petrol prices has shocked consumers. Diesel prices have also jumped by ₹12.5 per litre. This surge in fuel prices is tied to a fraudulent order from the Ministry of Petroleum.

Before this development, fuel prices were stable. Experts expected no significant changes in the near term. The sudden price hike has taken many by surprise.

The immediate effects are felt across various sectors. Transport costs will rise, impacting goods and services. Consumers will face higher expenses at the pump.

Industry analysts warn that this could lead to inflationary pressures. The petroleum industry may struggle to regain trust after this incident. Experts urge the government to clarify its position on the matter.

The Ministry of Petroleum has not yet issued a detailed response. Stakeholders await further clarification on the fraudulent order.

The Ministry of Petroleum has confirmed that there is no proposal to increase fuel prices, despite worsening petrol and diesel shortages across Andhra Pradesh.

India has not raised petrol and diesel prices in the last four years. The government aims to maintain stable fuel prices amid global oil price fluctuations.

Recently, rumors suggested a ₹25 increase in fuel prices. The Ministry labeled these rumors as fake news and urged citizens not to believe them.

The government is actively exploring alternative routes to ensure an uninterrupted supply of crude oil. Officials are focused on managing supply chains effectively.

The Ministry stated, “There is no proposal to increase petrol and diesel prices currently before the government.” This clear stance highlights India’s unique position in the global market.

Observers note that maintaining stable fuel prices could be crucial for economic stability. The government’s proactive approach may help mitigate further shortages.

LPG consumption in India decreased by 13% due to the conflict in West Asia. This drop has significantly impacted energy markets.

Petrol sales, however, saw an increase of 7.6%, reaching 3.78 million tons. In contrast, diesel consumption increased by 8.1% to 8.727 million tons.

The decrease in LPG usage is notable. Total LPG consumption dropped from 2.729 million tons last year to 2.379 million tons.

Domestic LPG sales fell by 8.1% to 2.219 million tons. Commercial LPG usage saw a staggering decrease of approximately 48%.

Bulk LPG sales plummeted by 75.5%. These trends indicate a shift in consumer behavior and market dynamics.

Indian refineries have been instructed to increase LPG production from petrochemical feedstock. This move aims to stabilize supply amid disruptions.

The Indian oil and gas market is projected to grow significantly. Demand is expected to reach 5.99 million barrels per day by 2026.

India’s dependence on imports for crude oil remains high at approximately 88-90%. For LPG, dependence stands at around 60%.

Geopolitical tensions in West Asia have caused supply disruptions affecting both commercial and domestic users—this has reshaped energy priorities.

The current state highlights a complex interplay of demand shifts and supply challenges in the Indian energy sector. Stakeholders must navigate these evolving conditions carefully.

The wider picture

Fuel prices are crucial indicators of economic health, often reflecting inflation trends. Today, the latest petrol and diesel prices have been announced across major cities in India, revealing a mixed bag of costs.

In Mumbai, petrol is priced at ₹103.54 per liter, while diesel stands at ₹90.03. Just a short distance away in Pune, petrol costs approximately ₹104 and diesel is around ₹90.37. Nagpur shows a slightly higher petrol price at ₹104.43 and diesel at ₹90.98. Meanwhile, in Ratnagiri, petrol is recorded at ₹100.39 and diesel at ₹93.59.

As these prices fluctuate, they impact not just consumers but also the broader economy. The government and financial analysts closely monitor these changes, as they can influence inflation rates and economic policy decisions.

In addition to the fuel price updates, today marks a significant lunar phase. The Moon is currently in its Waxing Gibbous phase, with 92% of its surface illuminated. This phase is often associated with growth and abundance, coinciding with the upcoming Full Moon predicted for April 1.

Observers note that the interplay between fuel prices and lunar phases can sometimes reflect broader economic cycles. As the Full Moon approaches, many anticipate potential shifts in consumer behavior and spending patterns.

Tax loss harvesting strategies are also in play as investors look to manage their gains amid fluctuating market conditions. This financial maneuvering can further complicate the economic landscape as fuel prices remain a key concern for many.

As the day unfolds, analysts will continue to assess these developments, providing insights into how fuel prices and lunar cycles may shape economic trends in the coming weeks. Details remain unconfirmed regarding potential policy changes in response to these price shifts.

The government has slashed excise duties on petrol and diesel, aiming to shield consumers from rising fuel costs. However, the impact remains uncertain.

The post Petrol Diesel Price Excise Duty Cut Shakes Market appeared first on India News.

Who is involved

In a surprising move, the government has cut the excise duty on petrol from Rs 13 to Rs 3 per litre, and eliminated the excise duty on diesel entirely, which was previously set at Rs 10 per litre. This shift comes as international crude prices have surged from around $70 per barrel to nearly $122 per barrel, raising concerns about the financial strain on consumers and the economy.

The decisive moment arrived on March 27, 2026, when the government announced these cuts amid growing public concern over rising fuel costs, especially with state elections on the horizon. The excise duty cut is expected to result in a staggering revenue loss of INR 1.75 lakh crore annually, a significant hit to government finances.

Despite the cuts, oil marketing companies continue to face substantial losses, estimated at Rs 24 per litre on petrol and Rs 30 per litre on diesel. This situation has left many wondering how quickly these companies will pass on the benefits of the duty cut to consumers. As of now, retail pump prices have remained unchanged, raising questions about the effectiveness of the government’s intervention.

Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri remarked, “The government faced a choice between passing on the full impact to consumers or absorbing part of the shock.” This highlights the delicate balance the government is trying to maintain between consumer protection and fiscal responsibility.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated, “The reduction in excise duty will provide protection to consumers from rise in prices.” However, experts caution that while the cut may prevent further price hikes, it does not guarantee cheaper fuel. A market analyst noted, “The cut may not make fuel cheaper, but it could stop prices from rising further at a time of global uncertainty.”

Additionally, the government has imposed export duties of INR 21.5 per litre on diesel and INR 29.5 per litre on aviation turbine fuel (ATF), further complicating the landscape for oil companies. The benefit of the duty cut appears to be directed towards stabilizing prices rather than reducing them, leaving consumers in a precarious position.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding how soon oil marketing companies will adjust their retail prices in response to the excise duty cut. The long-term impact of this decision on fuel prices remains uncertain, as the global oil market continues to fluctuate.

Panic buying of petrol erupted in Indore due to unfounded rumors. Authorities confirm adequate fuel supplies are available.

The post Petrol Panic Buying in Indore Amid Rumors appeared first on India News.

How it unfolded

Just before the recent surge in demand, the situation in Indore, India, appeared stable. However, rumors of a petrol shortage began to circulate, triggering a wave of panic among motorists.

On March 25, 2023, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged in New Delhi, with petrol priced at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 per litre. Despite the stability in prices, the whispers of potential shortages created a frenzy.

As panic buying took hold, district administrations quickly stepped in to reassure citizens that there was no shortage of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas. M L Maru, the district supply controller, emphasized, “There is sufficient stock available and petrol pumps will continue to receive supplies.” This statement aimed to quell the rising anxiety among the public.

However, the situation escalated as some petrol pumps in Indore faced short-term dry-outs due to the sudden rush of customers and delayed tanker arrivals. Rajendra Wasu, president of the Indore petrol dealers’ association, noted, “There was some delay in supply from a depot of one oil company which created panic in the evening. But there is no shortage of fuel.”

In Madhya Pradesh, there are approximately 5,500 fuel stations, with about 275 located in Indore district. Daily consumption in the district is estimated at around 10 lakh litres of petrol and about 15 lakh litres of diesel. This high demand only added to the urgency felt by motorists.

Ujjain, a nearby city, has around 150 petrol pumps with adequate stocks, including about 16,000 KL of petrol and 25,000 KL of diesel. Despite the availability of fuel, the panic buying in Indore led many to rush to fill their tanks. Rohit Sharma, a motorist, shared, “I saw messages saying petrol pumps might run dry, so I came to fill fuel.”

As the dust settles, officials continue to assure the public that there is no fuel shortage. Anjali Jain, a commuter, remarked, “Everyone suddenly came to fill petrol because of the rumours.” The situation highlights the impact of misinformation and the importance of clear communication in times of uncertainty.

With oil refineries operating at high capacity and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel available, the government has reassured that there is no shortage of essential fuels across the country. As of now, the situation appears to be stabilizing, but the recent events serve as a reminder of how quickly panic can spread in the face of uncertainty.

On March 23, 2026, the Karur District and Sessions Court in Madurai delivered a significant verdict, convicting nine individuals for their roles in a deadly petrol bomb attack that occurred on October 30, 2012. This brutal incident resulted in the deaths of seven people and left thirteen others injured.

The attack unfolded as a group was returning from the Thevar Guru pooja event in Ramanathapuram district. The assailants hurled petrol bombs at the victims, leading to a tragic loss of life and severe injuries.

During the trial, which was conducted under the direction of the Madras High Court, the prosecution presented compelling evidence against the accused. Notably, two of the accused were murdered during the trial, adding a layer of complexity to the proceedings.

The case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including IPC 302 for murder, and also under the Explosive Substances Act, underscoring the severity of the crime.

As the verdict was announced, the community reflected on the long-lasting impact of the attack. Families of the victims have awaited justice for over a decade, and this conviction marks a pivotal moment in their pursuit of closure.

In a related development, authorities in Gujarat have confirmed adequate supplies of petrol and diesel amid recent panic buying. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi urged citizens not to fall for misinformation, as long queues formed at petrol pumps, with some waiting up to five hours.

The connection between the petrol bomb attack and current events highlights ongoing concerns about safety and violence in the region. The conviction serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences of such acts and the need for continued vigilance.

As the situation evolves, both the legal outcomes of this case and the public’s response to the petrol supply issues will be closely monitored.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further implications of the court’s decision on community safety and legal reforms.

What’s causing the fuel frenzy in Gujarat and Bangladesh? Social media rumors have sparked panic buying, leading to long queues at petrol pumps in Gujarat.

Authorities have confirmed that there are adequate supplies of petrol and diesel in the state, despite reports of 5-hour waits at some stations.

In Bangladesh, the situation is more dire. The Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners’ Association has warned of potential shutdowns due to fuel shortages, with many petrol pumps in Dhaka and surrounding areas already closed.

Panic buying has been reported in both regions, fueled by fears of dwindling fuel supplies.

Dhimant Ghelani from the Federation of Gujarat Petroleum Dealers Association stated, “There is no actual shortage of petrol or diesel in the state.” This reassurance comes as temporary disruptions in supply chains were attributed to recent holidays.

To combat the situation, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has introduced adjustments in lifting norms to ensure smoother fuel distribution across Gujarat.

Officials expect the situation to normalize within this week itself, but uncertainties linger regarding the fuel crunch in Bangladesh, which is linked to global supply disruptions tied to tensions in West Asia.

Details remain unconfirmed, but the impact of these developments is being closely monitored as both regions navigate the challenges posed by the current fuel crisis.
