The cumulative hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices over the past five months is ₹1,498. The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association is protesting against the increase in commercial cooking gas prices.

P.P. Abdurahman, a representative of the association, stated, “The unilateral ₹1,000 increase is unprecedented in India and wholly unjustifiable.” He warned that if such price increases continue, hotels and restaurants will have no option but to raise food prices by 50% to 60% to stay afloat.

The government will cut LPG connections for households with PNG infrastructure by June 30, 2026. Authorities are identifying households using both LPG and PNG services.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued new rules for gas cylinder connections in March 2026. Households with a PNG connection cannot apply for new LPG or LPG refills.

City gas distribution companies are advised to prioritize PNG connections for commercial establishments. The government aims to promote piped gas connections (PNG) and reduce reliance on LPG.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions have severely impacted India’s LPG gas supply, raising concerns among consumers and officials alike. With the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 54% of India’s LPG supplies are disrupted, forcing the government to take immediate action to mitigate the crisis.

India relies heavily on imports to meet around 60% of its LPG needs, with a staggering 90% of those imports coming through the Strait of Hormuz. The recent geopolitical developments have put this vital supply route at risk, leading to a scramble for alternatives.

In response, the government has ramped up domestic LPG production by 40% compared to pre-West Asia conflict levels. This surge in production aims to alleviate the pressure on LPG supplies and ensure that households continue to receive fuel for cooking and heating.

Despite these efforts, the situation remains precarious. The government has increased waiting times for cylinder bookings from 21 days to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions. This delay highlights the strain on the supply chain as demand continues to outpace availability.

Currently, around 7,500 domestic and commercial connections have been provided for PNG (Piped Natural Gas), but the number of households with PNG connections is significantly lower at about 1.5 crore, compared to 33.3 crore domestic LPG connections. The government is encouraging consumers to switch to PNG where available to ease the burden on LPG supplies.

Sujata Sharma, a government spokesperson, noted, “The supply of LPG is affected due to the prevailing geopolitical situation, but a lot of cargo has been lined up.” This statement reflects the government’s commitment to securing alternative supplies while navigating the complexities of the current crisis.

As the situation develops, the government has directed refiners to maximize LPG production and divert propane, butane, and other streams from petrochemical manufacturing to LPG production. This strategic shift aims to bolster the domestic supply of LPG gas amidst ongoing challenges.

With the uncertainty surrounding the geopolitical landscape, details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term stability of LPG supplies. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping to stabilize the market and ensure that consumers have access to this essential resource.
