The SIR exercise in Bengal was announced on October 27 last year, setting the stage for a significant electoral overhaul. As the state gears up for elections scheduled on April 23 and 29, the CEO, Manoj Agarwal, confirmed that the first supplementary list of disputed voters may be published today.

Currently, over 60 lakh names are pending in the adjudication list, with 29 lakh adjudications completed out of the 60 lakh cases under judicial review. The final electoral roll published on February 28 lists a total of 7,04,59,284 voters in West Bengal.

In a move to streamline the electoral process, the Election Commission has removed 73 Returning Officers (ROs) in West Bengal. This decision aims to enhance the integrity of the upcoming elections, which will now be held in two phases, a notable reduction from the previous seven to eight phases.

Manoj Agarwal stated, “Elections are being held in two phases in West Bengal after many years,” emphasizing the importance of this change. He further assured that “the Election Commission is committed to conducting free and fair elections,” a sentiment echoed by various officials in the state.

As the electoral landscape shifts, observers are keenly watching how these changes will impact voter turnout and overall election integrity. With vote counting planned for May 4, the pressure is on to resolve the pending disputes swiftly.

Amidst these developments, the electorate before the SIR exercise stood at 7,66,37,529, with 58,20,899 names deleted in the draft roll. These figures highlight the scale of the adjustments being made to ensure a fair electoral process.

Details remain unconfirmed as the situation evolves, but the focus remains on ensuring that every eligible voter is accounted for in the upcoming elections.

West Bengal's Election Commission has released the first supplementary voter list, settling 27 lakh records. Voter search process now active.

The wider picture

The first supplementary voters’ list is part of the ongoing SIR exercise in West Bengal. This crucial step comes as the state gears up for assembly elections, with polling scheduled for April 23 and 29, and counting set for May 4. The Election Commission aims to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

Today marks a significant development as the Election Commission publishes the first supplementary voter list under the SIR process. A total of 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled, with about 2 lakh names processed daily. This effort is vital for voters who have faced uncertainty regarding their eligibility.

Voters can now appeal online through the ECI Net app or offline at district or sub-divisional offices if they have objections to the list. To facilitate this, 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts for voters whose names are excluded from the supplementary list. This move aims to address the concerns of many who have been left in limbo.

In a bid to streamline the process, 705 judicial officers have been engaged to determine the inclusion or exclusion of names in the supplementary list. This extensive involvement of judicial personnel underscores the importance of ensuring that the voter list is accurate and fair.

Before the supplementary list is made available online, it will first be displayed at polling booths, allowing voters to check their status directly. However, around 60 lakh voters were marked as ‘under adjudication’ in the final voters’ list published on February 28, raising concerns about their voting rights.

Amidst this backdrop, voters like Sourav Chakraborty express hope, stating, “I have all the documents that a genuine voter should possess. I believe the supplementary list will restore my voting right.” Meanwhile, Akramul Haque Sardar shares his anxiety, saying, “I have requested my BLO to check and inform me if my name has passed the adjudication test. I am spending anxious moments and praying that my name is on the list.”

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timing of the publication of the supplementary list and the implications for voters whose names are excluded. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as the elections approach, emphasizing the need for clarity and transparency in the voter search process.
