A remarkable ichthyosaur fossil was discovered in Germany, revealing how an injured marine reptile survived against the odds. This specimen, belonging to the Temnodontosaurus genus, is approximately 180 million years old.
Researchers found evidence of severe jaw injuries on the fossil. The ichthyosaur could grow over 20 feet (around 6.5 metres) long. It was discovered in the Mistelgau clay pit, a site known for well-preserved marine fossils.
Key findings:
- The specimen includes fragments of the skull, lower jaw, shoulder girdle, forefins, spine, and over 100 teeth.
- This ichthyosaur resembles modern dolphins in appearance.
- The discovery suggests ichthyosaurs survived longer than previously believed.
Researchers stated, “This well-preserved specimen shows evidence of injuries and adaptations, suggesting survival despite physical challenges.” The implications for paleontology are significant as they enhance understanding of ancient marine predators.
