Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer who defined Bollywood cinema, passed away on April 12, 2026, at the age of 92. She died at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure.
Bhosle’s remarkable career spanned over eight decades, beginning in the 1940s. Born on September 8, 1933, she recorded over 12,000 songs across multiple languages and genres, becoming a household name in India and beyond.
Throughout her illustrious career, Bhosle received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2000 and two Grammy nominations. Her most popular songs, such as “Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Ja” and “In Ankhon Ki Masti,” continue to resonate with fans.
As news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from across the globe. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, “Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world.”
Actress Hema Malini expressed disbelief, stating, “I just can’t believe how someone so full of life… has left us grieving.” Music composer AR Rahman added, “She lives forever with her voice and aura … What an artist.”
Bhosle was not only a musical icon but also the younger sister of the equally legendary Lata Mangeshkar. Her collaborations, including the memorable “Bow Down Mister” with Boy George in 1991, showcased her versatility and ability to transcend cultural boundaries.
In addition to her music career, Bhosle launched a restaurant chain named Asha’s in Dubai and Britain, further expanding her influence beyond the recording studio.
As the world mourns her loss, Tjinder Singh of Cornershop reflected, “Few have reached the ability to be loved in so many languages and dialects… her songs gave us astonishment of heart.” Bhosle’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through her timeless music.
