The Reserve Bank of India announced that 98.47% of the 2000 rupee notes have been returned since the withdrawal announcement on May 19, 2023.
The total value of these notes was ₹3.56 lakh crores. By April 30, 2026, only ₹5,451 crores will remain in circulation.
Despite the withdrawal, the 2000 rupee notes remain legal tender. On October 9, 2023, RBI began accepting deposits of these notes at its issue offices.
Individuals and institutions can send their notes via India Post to RBI’s issue offices. RBI provides exchange facilities for these notes at its 19 issue offices.
The data shows a significant return rate since the announcement nearly three years ago. The RBI stated that as of May 19, 2023, 98.47% of the existing notes had been returned.
The swift response from the public highlights confidence in the banking system. The process reflects ongoing efforts to manage currency effectively amid changing economic conditions.
