The numbers
The cricket IPL 2026 season is poised for a thrilling start, highlighted by the staggering sale of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for $1.78 billion. This marks a significant investment in the franchise, which is now under the ownership of Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone.
In a recent captains’ meeting held at the BCCI headquarters, several key rules were discussed, including the continuation of the Impact Player rule until at least 2027. This rule, introduced in 2023, has been a game-changer, allowing teams to strategically substitute players during matches.
Another notable change is the allowance for a ball change after the 10th over of the second innings due to dew conditions, a move aimed at maintaining the quality of play. Additionally, new training protocols prohibit formal practice sessions on match days, emphasizing a fresh approach to player preparation.
Rishabh Pant, who played 14 matches in IPL 2025, scored 269 runs at an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.17. His performance has drawn attention, with RCB captain Faf du Plessis urging him to become a more impactful player. “I want him to be more of a high-impact player,” du Plessis stated, highlighting the need for Pant to refine his game plan.
Du Plessis also commented on Pant’s stroke play, saying, “Rishabh Pant’s stroke play is one that looks all over the place. He needs to figure out exactly what his game plan looks like to give himself the best chance.” The captain emphasized the importance of Pant’s initial six balls in setting the tone for his innings.
RCB, fresh off their first IPL title win in 2025, is looking to build on that success. With Aryaman Vikram Birla stepping in as chair under the new ownership, the franchise aims to leverage its resources to enhance performance on the field.
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how these changes will impact the teams and the overall competition. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional rule changes or player acquisitions that may arise before the season kicks off.
