Internal dissent within AIADMK is growing as a faction of MLAs seeks to support Vijay’s TVK for government formation in Tamil Nadu. Over two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs convened at CV Shanmugam’s office to discuss this potential shift. The majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly is 118 seats.
Key facts:
- TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats.
- AIADMK secured 47 seats in the recent elections.
- The Tamil Nadu Assembly has a total of 234 members.
Unnamed AIADMK MLAs stated, “If he fails to act, over 30 MLAs could break away and extend their support to Vijay.” The Congress has also extended conditional support to TVK for government formation.
This political realignment follows a fractured mandate in the Tamil Nadu elections, altering traditional political equations. TVK is currently 10 seats short of a majority.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai remarked, “The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted.” Meanwhile, unnamed Congress leaders emphasized, “The mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government committed to protecting the Constitution.”
