Earthquake Today: 5.9 Magnitude Hits Hindu Kush, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region today at around 9:50 pm, sending tremors across Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India.

The quake’s epicenter was located in Badakhshan province, Afghanistan, at a depth of 150 km. Residents in high-rise buildings reported shaking that lasted for a few seconds, with reports of tremors coming in from cities including Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Poonch, Srinagar, and Udhampur.

In Pakistan, cities like Islamabad and Peshawar also felt the tremors. Despite the quake’s moderate classification, it was strong enough to cause noticeable shaking across large distances.

No immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged so far. “I felt a strong jolt which lasted for a few seconds,” said local resident Baldev Chand.

Another user from Delhi noted, “The intensity of the tremors was so high that fans and beds in people’s homes began to shake.” Vaishali Poddar added, “I’ve never felt tremors this strong before.”

Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes due to its position along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs highlights that the country remains extremely vulnerable to natural disasters.

Details remain unconfirmed as authorities assess the situation. The region’s seismic activity serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks faced by communities in North India and Afghanistan.
