The wider picture
Film director Ranjith Balakrishnan has been arrested following a sexual assault complaint lodged by a young actress in Kochi, India. This shocking development has sent ripples through the film industry, raising serious questions about safety and accountability in the workplace.
The complaint alleges that Ranjith entered the actress’s caravan without permission and attempted to sexually assault her. Following the allegations, he was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody and is currently held at Ernakulam sub jail. The case has been escalated with charges filed under several non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In a swift response to the allegations, Ranjith was suspended from the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). The organization has expressed its commitment to supporting the survivor and condemning such behavior within the industry. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to thoroughly investigate the case.
This isn’t the first time Ranjith has faced such accusations. In 2024, a Bengali actress alleged that he had touched her inappropriately during an audition for the film “Paleri Manikyam” back in 2009. The actress, who took 15 years to come forward, stated that the lack of support made it difficult for her to speak out earlier.
Reactions to the news have been swift. The actress involved in the previous allegations remarked, “Karma is a bitch, it leaves nobody. Whatever goes around comes around,” highlighting the long-standing issues of harassment in the industry. Another actress emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “These kinds of sexual predators should be put behind bars. This should be set as an example that women deserve respect in their workplace.”
Kochi City Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar also weighed in, asserting that “it should not happen to any woman, especially at the workplace.” Meanwhile, Kerala’s Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian assured that such acts will not be accepted by the government or society.
As the investigation unfolds, Ranjith’s lawyer has indicated plans to file a bail plea in court. Observers are keenly watching how the legal proceedings will develop and what implications this case may have for the film industry in Kerala.
