Iron beam: Israel Deploys Laser System to UAE

Israel deployed a version of its Iron Beam laser-based air defense system to the UAE on May 1, 2026, amid escalating tensions with Iran.

The Iron Beam system neutralizes short-range rockets and drones using a concentrated laser beam. Israel also sent a surveillance platform called Spectro, which detects Iranian drones from 20 kilometers away. Several dozen Israeli military personnel are operating these systems in the UAE.

During the conflict, Iran launched over 500 ballistic missiles and around 2,000 drones targeting the UAE. The Iron Beam had previously been employed against projectiles from Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Iron Beam was declared operational in September 2025 after more than a decade of development. The Israeli Air Force stated that 14 batteries are necessary for significant combat impact. This system is expected to lower air defense costs compared to traditional missile interceptors.

Israel has provided real-time intelligence on missile launches from Iran to the UAE. Military cooperation between Israel and the UAE began with the Abraham Accords in 2020, enhancing regional security dynamics.

Officials have noted that this deployment represents a game-changer in countering projectile attacks. A source familiar with the matter commented, “It’s not a small number of boots on the ground.” A regional official remarked on “the value of being Israel’s friend.”
