Kishan replaces Sharma as world’s top T20I batter; Head rises in Test rankings

Ishan Kishan, an India wicketkeeper-batter, has ascended to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, displacing his teammate Abhishek Sharma. This change follows India’s recent two-match T20 International series against Ireland in Belfast, which India lost 2-0.

Kishan’s rise marks the first time he has reached the summit of the T20I batting rankings. He is now the fourth batter from India to achieve this feat, following Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma. His performance at the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year contributed to his career-best rating, where he accumulated 317 runs.

Changes in Test Batting Rankings

In the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, Australia’s Travis Head has claimed the top spot for the first time in his career. This shift occurred after England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook experienced drops in their rating points following their performances in the third Test against New Zealand.

Head is the first Australian to lead the Test Batting Rankings since Marnus Labuschagne held the position in June 2023. Root, who had recently begun his twelfth stint at the top, has now moved to third place, while Brook is positioned one point behind Head.

Several players from New Zealand saw improvements in their rankings after their team secured a 2-1 victory in the ICC World Test Championship series. Among them, Daryl Mitchell moved up five places to 11th, Devon Conway advanced 14 places to 15th, and Tom Latham climbed 12 places to 31st. England’s opener Ben Duckett also improved his standing, moving from 17th to 14th place after scoring a century in the first innings.

Bowling Rankings Updates

In the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings, Jasprit Bumrah has regained the top position. This happened after Matt Henry lost points due to missing a match, conceding the top spot back to Bumrah just one week after taking it.

Other notable movements in the bowling rankings include Nathan Smith, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series and moved up eight places to 38th. William O’Rourke also advanced five places to 27th. England captain Ben Stokes concluded his Test career as the 34th-ranked bowler, having moved up three slots, and as the third-ranked all-rounder, climbing two slots. He is 54th in the Test batting rankings.

The latest weekly update also took into account performances from the first Test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka, and the one-off Test between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka’s Dhananjay de Silva moved up six places to 21st in batting, and West Indies’ Roston Chase advanced 14 places to 79th. Among bowlers, the Windies pair of Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach gained ground, with Joseph moving up nine places to 14th and Roach up four places to 17th. Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani also improved, moving up six places to 19th.

T20I Ranking Movements

In the T20I rankings, Abhishek Sharma’s 11-month tenure at the top concluded with Kishan’s ascent. From Ireland, Lorean Tucker moved up four places to 77th after scoring a half-century in the first match against India. Harry Tector advanced one place to 79th, and Ross Adair climbed six slots to 84th. Seam bowler Matthew Humphreys moved up one place to 25th after taking four wickets in the series.
