The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has taken a firm stand against viral WhatsApp messages claiming that temperatures in Kerala will soar between 45°C and 55°C from late April. These alarming messages have sparked confusion and concern among residents.
KSDMA officials clarified that no such warnings have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or any Kerala authorities. “No such warnings have been issued by the IMD or Kerala authorities,” a KSDMA spokesperson stated.
The misinformation included baseless claims about potential phone explosions and fuel tank hazards, which KSDMA has labeled as scientifically unfounded. “The claims about phone explosions and fuel tanks are scientifically baseless,” they emphasized.
In response to the spread of these false messages, KSDMA has reminded citizens that spreading misinformation about heatwave warnings is punishable under the Disaster Management Act. “Spreading misinformation is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act,” the authority warned.
Residents are advised to rely solely on official websites and verified social media pages for accurate weather updates. The KSDMA has also issued official guidance for the public regarding heat safety measures.
The viral messages suggested avoiding outdoor activities and not filling fuel tanks completely, adding to public anxiety. However, KSDMA reassures that these precautions are unnecessary based on the current weather forecasts.
As temperatures are expected to rise starting from April 29 and continue until May 12, with peak temperatures reaching 45°C, KSDMA is actively monitoring the situation. They recommend avoiding direct sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM to ensure public safety.
