Liam Livingstone has not played international cricket since the ICC Champions Trophy, marking nearly a year away from the national setup. His absence has raised eyebrows, especially given his potential and past performances.
In recent statements, Rob Key, the England Cricket Board’s director, emphasized that there is no way a player of Liam Livingstone’s ability is not up for selection for England. Key’s confidence in Livingstone’s talent contrasts sharply with the player’s frustrations regarding the management’s communication during his time away.
Livingstone has openly criticized the England management for poor communication and lack of support during his absence. “If you are in, you are in, and if you are not in, no-one cares about you,” he stated, highlighting the isolation he felt while sidelined.
Despite these challenges, Livingstone’s track record remains impressive. He has represented England in 100 matches across formats and was even considered for leadership responsibilities, captaining the ODI series against West Indies in late 2024.
His recent performances in domestic leagues have been noteworthy. In the IPL 2022 season, he scored 437 runs in 14 innings at an average of 36.42, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. He was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13 crore, a testament to his value in the cricketing world.
Livingstone’s international form, however, has been less stellar. He managed only 74 runs in five T20Is last year at an average of 14.80. In contrast, his performances in domestic competitions were more promising, with 241 runs at an average of 40.16 in The Hundred for Birmingham Phoenix and 260 runs at an average of 52 in the Vitality Blast for Lancashire.
Rob Key remains optimistic about Livingstone’s future, stating, “We debated him for the Sri Lanka series. Liam Livingstone is very much a player that we would love to see back to his best, scoring runs, and then back in the England set-up.” This indicates that Livingstone is still in contention for selection if he performs well in upcoming matches.
However, the situation remains delicate. Livingstone’s central contract was not renewed after a lack of communication from Rob Key, leaving him in a precarious position. As he works to regain his form and confidence, the cricketing community watches closely, eager to see if he can reclaim his spot in the England squad.
