Missing Link Project to Transform Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The inauguration of the Missing Link project on May 1, 2026, will significantly reduce travel time and distance on one of India’s busiest expressways. The project spans 13.3 km and cuts the distance between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 6 km.

Travel time will decrease by about 20 to 30 minutes. Initially, the route will be accessible only to light vehicles. Buses will be allowed in a later phase, while heavy vehicles will continue using the existing route.

This stretch includes the world’s widest underground tunnel, measuring 22.33 metres. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway became fully operational in 2002, but traffic congestion has persisted.

Challenges in the Borghat section have led to daily fuel wastage worth ₹1 Crore. On normal days, average delays reach around 30 minutes, extending up to two hours during peak times.

Maharashtra Day highlights the significance of this development for commuters. The Missing Link project aims to alleviate long-standing traffic issues faced by travelers.
