Nagaland conducted large-scale disaster preparedness mock drills simulating a 7.7-magnitude earthquake to enhance emergency response readiness across multiple districts. The eighth edition of state-level mock exercises focused on earthquake and extreme weather disasters.
Key details:
- The exercise was organized by NSDMA, the Home Department, and district disaster management authorities in collaboration with NDMA.
- Drills assessed coordination among departments and communication channels critical for effective disaster response.
- Community participation was integral as first responders were often local residents.
- The drill included scenarios like landslides and building collapses causing casualties.
Maj Gen K.J. Bahl noted this year’s drill was impact-based, featuring district-specific scenarios with estimated casualties and resource needs. A Civil Defence air raid and blackout exercise, termed ‘Operation Night Guard,’ also took place.
Nagaland lies in the high-risk Seismic Zone V. The drill occurred in districts including Kohima, Dimapur, and Kiphire. Abhijit Sinha emphasized the importance of assessing coordination among departments for effective disaster management.
Public feedback is crucial as ordinary citizens might face challenges during disasters that authorities may not perceive immediately.
