Nicola Carey is on a mission to secure her spot in the Australia squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in June. After a stellar performance in the recent T20I series against the West Indies, where Australia triumphed 3-0, Carey is eager to make her mark.
Having played a pivotal role in Australia’s victories at the 2020 T20 World Cup and the 2022 ODI World Cup, Carey’s experience is invaluable. She has participated in 25 ODIs and 31 T20Is, claiming 19 wickets in each format, showcasing her all-round capabilities.
Carey made her return to the Australia XI at the SCG last month after a hiatus from international cricket since December 2022. “I obviously haven’t been here for a while, but coming back in, there’s a lot of familiar faces, which is always nice,” she said, reflecting on her reintegration into the team.
During the ongoing tour of the West Indies, Carey has embraced her role, especially with Annabel Sutherland rested for the ODI series, opening doors for other players. “Belsy (Sutherland) is massive for this team, and when you take her out, that sort of leaves a couple of gaps, both batting and bowling,” Carey noted, emphasizing the importance of team dynamics.
The first ODI against the West Indies is scheduled for March 28, 2026, and Carey is focused on making her presence felt. “It’s a massive tournament. Everyone here would want to be a part of that. That’s the carrot dangling at the end of this,” she added, highlighting the significance of the upcoming competition.
Carey’s decision to turn down a Cricket Australia contract in early 2023 to maximize her playing opportunities in domestic cricket appears to be paying off. “It’s been a pretty busy last few months, so I feel that’s held me in good stead for potential future travel,” she remarked, indicating her readiness for the challenges ahead.
