Property Tax Dues Lead to Sealing of Jayalalithaa’s Property

A house belonging to J. Jayalalithaa has been sealed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) over unpaid property tax dues that have accumulated since 2017. The total dues reached ₹1.6 crore before waivers, but after adjustments, the amount payable is approximately ₹83 lakh.

The property, categorized as ‘Commercial’, has been rented by Vijay Mallya. Despite the property being registered under Jayalalithaa’s name in GHMC records, her heirs were declared legal heirs in May 2020 following a ruling by the Madras High Court.

The GHMC issued a ‘Red Notice’ due to the non-payment of dues, which currently stand at ₹82.91 lakh after rebates under the One-Time Settlement scheme. This scheme offers a 90% waiver on accumulated interest for property tax arrears, yet no payments have been made despite repeated recovery efforts.

The property will remain under GHMC custody until the outstanding dues are cleared. Observers are closely watching the situation, as the heirs of Jayalalithaa face pressure to resolve the tax issues and reclaim the property.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential plans by the heirs to address the outstanding dues.
