Kappan died in a private hospital in Palai. He sustained injuries from a car accident in Thiruvananthapuram in October 2025. His wife was present during the accident when the brakes failed while bringing the car down from a parking level.

Kappan was known for his activism against corruption and for educating the public about consumer rights. He founded the Center for Consumer Education and was a regular presence in media organizations.
