The Election Commission of India will publish the first supplementary voter list under the SIR process today in West Bengal. This development comes amidst ongoing controversies regarding voter exclusions.

Previously, there were significant concerns about pending records. A total of 27 lakh pending voter records have now been settled, with about 2 lakh names processed daily.

Voters can appeal online via the ECI Net app or offline at district or sub-divisional offices if they have objections to the list. To facilitate this, 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts following Supreme Court directives.

Meanwhile, the final electoral rolls for Tamil Nadu show a notable drop in voter count. The previous count was 6.41 crore, which has decreased to 5.67 crore.

The largest constituency in Chennai district is Shozhinganallur with 5,36,991 electors. In contrast, Thiruvallur district has the highest number of electors at 31,57,413 voters. Ariyalur district has the minimum number of electors with 5,22,954 voters.

Archana Patnaik stated that anyone can check their names on the website. The state government has issued directives to district magistrates for crowd-control measures.

The West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4, 2026 are critical for Mamata Banerjee as she seeks a fourth consecutive term. The BJP aims to make significant gains in the state following previous attempts.

Key statistics:

The West Bengal Assembly consists of 294 members.

The voter turnout was recorded at 92.5%.

91 lakh voters were removed from the electoral rolls before the election.

27 lakh deletions were sent to adjudication tribunals.

The BJP targets over 100 seats in this assembly.

Vote counting started at 8 AM. The election is viewed as a test of narratives between the BJP and TMC. The Swarupnagar constituency went to polls on April 29, 2026, with four candidates contesting.

The campaign was marked by controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. A narrow result could lead to debates about whether the SIR impacted outcomes. Analysts note, “If the final result is narrow, the SIR will instantly become the dominant lens through which it is read.”

Mamata Banerjee’s leadership faces scrutiny as she competes against a resurgent BJP. Observers highlight that this election may define her political future and influence party dynamics in West Bengal.

The Bengal election results will determine the political future of Mamata Banerjee and the BJP's standing in West Bengal.

The election results will determine whether Mamata Banerjee can secure a fourth consecutive term or if the BJP will finally break through in West Bengal.

West Bengal Assembly elections were held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026. The counting of votes for 293 Assembly seats is scheduled for May 4, 2026. The Election Commission of India appointed 165 additional counting observers and 77 police observers for this process.

The voter turnout was high, with 92.8% in the first phase and 91.47% in the second phase — the highest since Independence. However, around 91 lakh voters were removed from the rolls ahead of the election due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which affected approximately 12% of the electorate.

Mamata Banerjee is seeking a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister. The magic number to secure a majority in the 294-member Assembly is 148. Both camps claim the record turnout as a mandate in their favor.

Repolling for the Falta Assembly seat is scheduled for May 21, 2026, due to electoral malpractices. The shadow over this election includes controversies surrounding the SIR of electoral rolls.

Whatever verdict emerges today, its implications are expected to travel beyond the corridors of Nabanna and into the national political landscape.

India's 2026 citizenship rule changes impact OCI cardholders and electoral roll processes. Key provisions include electronic applications and consent for fast track immigration.

The post India citizenship rules 2026 changes appeared first on India News.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 have introduced significant changes to the application process for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders in India. The new rules streamline the submission of citizenship applications through an electronic portal.

Key changes:

All OCI card registration and renunciation applications must be submitted electronically.

A minor child cannot hold the passport of any other country while holding an Indian passport.

The requirement for duplicate document submissions has been removed.

Registered individuals can receive either a physical OCI card or an electronic OCI (e-OCI).

OCI applicants must sign a new consent form to utilize the Fast Track Immigration Programme.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has also taken place across twelve states. This revision has resulted in a net removal of 5.2 crore persons from the electoral rolls.

The last SIR occurred in 2003. In Assam, there are currently 119,570 D voters, with 70,723 women among them as of October 2019. Additionally, around 3 lakh persons were marked as D-voters during the 1997 revision.

The implications of these changes raise concerns regarding voter representation and the role of the Foreigners Tribunal in processing citizenship claims.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal has sparked controversy and debate as significant deletions occur.

The post Sir: Special Intensive Revision () of Electoral Rolls in West Bengal appeared first on India News.

What the data shows

What does the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal mean for voters? It signifies a major overhaul, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) set to publish the first supplementary voter list today, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s electoral landscape.

As part of the SIR process, a staggering 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled, with approximately 2 lakh names processed daily. This aggressive pace is crucial as the state prepares for upcoming elections, where accuracy in voter rolls is paramount.

To facilitate this massive undertaking, the ECI has established 19 appeal tribunals across 23 districts, staffed by former High Court judges. This infrastructure aims to address the concerns of voters and ensure a fair process, especially given that over 60 lakh citizens’ names are currently under adjudication.

However, the SIR process has not come without controversy. Reports indicate that 61.7 lakh names have been deleted from the electoral rolls, raising alarms among political parties. Notably, 47,000 names were removed from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, a seat won by Mamata Banerjee in 2021 by a margin of 58,832 votes.

Banerjee has expressed confidence, stating, “I will win from Bhabanipur even if by only one vote.” This assertion underscores the high stakes involved as the Trinamool Congress seeks to maintain its dominance against the BJP, which has accused the ruling party of wanting to retain names of illegal immigrants and even deceased individuals on the voter list.

The implications of the SIR are profound. The deletions and ongoing adjudications could reshape the electoral dynamics in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress currently holds a significant advantage over the BJP in both vote percentage and seat count.

As the ECI continues its work, the political landscape remains charged. What remains uncertain is how these changes will affect voter turnout and party strategies in the lead-up to the elections. Details remain unconfirmed.
