C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is set to make its electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, emphasizing youth empowerment and safety.

Reaction from the field

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), under the leadership of C. Joseph Vijay, is poised to shake up the political landscape in Tamil Nadu as it makes its electoral debut on March 29, 2026. With a focus on youth empowerment and women’s safety, Vijay’s party is presenting a fresh alternative to the established political players.

Vijay has announced his candidacy in two key constituencies: Perambur and Tiruchi East. In Perambur, he faces off against incumbent MLA R.D. Shekar from the DMK, while in Tiruchi East, he will contend with DMK’s Inigo Irudayaraj and AIADMK’s K. Rajasekaran. This competitive landscape sets the stage for a significant electoral battle.

TVK’s manifesto outlines ambitious plans, including collateral-free education loans of up to 20 lakhs and an unemployment allowance of 4,000 rupees for graduates. For diploma holders, the allowance is set at 2,000 rupees, with a monthly stipend of 10,000 rupees for graduates and 8,000 rupees for ITI students. These financial incentives aim to address the pressing issue of unemployment among the youth.

Vijay’s campaign also promises to create 5 lakh internship opportunities through MSMEs, establishing a Tamil Nadu Youth Advisory Council to ensure youth participation in governance. “I will work to create a drug-free Tamil Nadu,” Vijay stated, emphasizing his commitment to combating drug abuse, a pressing issue in the state.

Moreover, TVK’s general secretary, ‘Bussy’ N. Anand, will contest from T. Nagar, while K.A. Sengottaiyan will represent the party in Gobichettipalayam. This diverse candidate lineup reflects TVK’s strategy to appeal to various demographics across Tamil Nadu.

Vijay’s campaign is underscored by a pledge for a corruption-free administration and enhanced safety for women. “I will ensure the safety of women,” he declared, aiming to address the growing concerns surrounding women’s security in the region. His commitment to transparency is encapsulated in his assertion, “I will not touch even one paisa of the people’s money.”

As the election date approaches, the political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu is charged with anticipation. TVK’s debut could potentially disrupt the traditional power dynamics, particularly against the backdrop of the DMK and AIADMK’s long-standing rivalry. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of TVK’s entry, but the stakes are undeniably high.
