Controversy over disciplinary decisions

England coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed confusion regarding the disciplinary process at the World Cup, following a decision by FIFA not to ban United States striker Folarin Balogun. Balogun, who received a red card during a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was expected to be suspended for the subsequent last-16 tie against Belgium. However, FIFA opted against enforcing an immediate suspension, making Balogun available to play.

This decision reportedly came after US President Donald Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the suspension. President Trump later thanked FIFA for what he described as “reversing a great injustice.”

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized the decision on social media, stating that “football must never become a playground for political power.” Blatter, who was replaced by Infantino in 2016, has frequently voiced concerns about decisions made during Infantino’s presidency.

The situation has drawn comparisons to a past incident involving Garrincha in the 1962 World Cup, where a disciplinary committee decided against an additional suspension after his red card. While that event occurred before automatic one-match suspensions were standard, the recent decision regarding Balogun is considered unprecedented in the World Cup since the introduction of automatic bans for red cards.

Tuchel questions consistency and VAR

Tuchel’s comments came after Jarell Quansah was sent off in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico. When asked if he would appeal Quansah’s ban, Tuchel questioned the consistency of FIFA’s decisions. “Where does this start and where does this end now?” Tuchel asked, adding, “Can we overturn it or not overturn it? What’s going on?”

Both Balogun and Quansah were sent off following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Quansah, a Bayer Leverkusen defender, received his red card in the 54th minute for a sliding challenge that caught Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo high on the shin. Balogun’s red card was for his foot landing on the ankle of Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic, causing it to buckle.

Apart from Balogun, the other players who have received red cards at the 2026 World Cup have served a suspension for their country’s next match. FIFA enacted a clause in its disciplinary code that allows it to “fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.” This action appears to contradict tournament regulations, which state that a red card automatically results in suspension from the team’s subsequent match.

Tuchel believes this intervention has created uncertainty regarding the rules. He argued that Balogun’s initial red card was not justified, but acknowledged that VAR and the referee had made the decision. “Who overturns this decision and when and on what grounds? And how far does this go now? It’s just strange for me. We just want to have consistency in the decisions,” Tuchel stated.

The England coach also highlighted the VAR process in his defense of Quansah. He noted that the challenge was not initially called a foul by the referee, suggesting that VAR’s involvement led to the decision. “You cannot take decisions on a still in a football match. It’s just not possible,” Tuchel remarked, expressing disappointment over the setback for Quansah.

US head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s ruling, maintaining that Balogun’s original dismissal was unfair. Conversely, Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia expressed anger, stating he was unaware that April Fools’ Day falls in July, and the Belgian federation is reportedly reviewing its legal options.

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken also criticized FIFA’s decision, calling it a “bad, bad, bad, bad, bad decision” and expressing sympathy for the United States, suggesting that any victory would be tainted. President Trump welcomed the news of Balogun’s reprieve on social media, thanking FIFA for reversing what he called a “grave injustice.”

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4888" src="https://india-news.com.in/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-32d61e28a0bc_img-3.webp" alt="Thomas Tuchel celebrating victory over Mexico.

Reactions and implications

The decision to lift Balogun’s suspension has generated mixed reactions, with many US fans expressing satisfaction, while others, including the Belgian team, have voiced outrage. FIFA has pointed to a bylaw allowing such decisions, though it has not offered further insight into the specific reasoning. The organization also maintained that its disciplinary process is not influenced by external interventions, despite reports of President Trump’s calls to President Infantino.

Blatter’s comments on X further questioned the independence of football’s disciplinary process, asking, “Quo vadis, Fifa?” if a US President intervenes with the FIFA President and a player is cleared before a knockout match. He reiterated that red cards should be overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies, not political phone calls.

The controversy has become a significant talking point of the tournament, adding scrutiny to FIFA’s handling of disciplinary matters. The USMNT had reached its current stage in the tournament based on its own performances, with Balogun being a key player. However, the perception that the US received an unfair advantage could affect how their potential advancement is viewed globally.

The Royal Belgian Football Association has confirmed it is exploring all available options to protect the integrity of the competition following FIFA’s announcement on Sunday that Balogun’s suspension had been lifted under Article 27 of its disciplinary rules.

Nagelsmann’s Departure and Germany’s World Cup Exit

Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Germany men’s national team. This decision follows the team’s early exit from the World Cup 2026, where they were eliminated in the last 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay in Boston. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, granting his request to be relieved of his duties.

Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023, initially expressed a desire to remain in charge, stating after the match, “I’m not someone who runs away.” However, he later reflected on the situation, saying, “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation.” He added that the decision was difficult but that the team deserved a fresh start after such a disappointment.

The DFB terminated their contractual relationship with the 38-year-old former Bayern Munich boss. According to one report, Nagelsmann was offered a severance package to cut short his contract, which was set to expire in 2028. This marks Nagelsmann’s second major tournament with Germany, having previously guided them to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals as hosts, where they lost to eventual winners Spain.

Germany has not won a World Cup knockout game since being crowned champions in 2014. They failed to advance beyond the group stage in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments under previous coaches. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf stated that Germany’s performance at the World Cup did not meet their standards, and that the federation would take time to discuss the reasons behind the team’s inability to perform to their potential.

Klopp Emerges as Successor

Following Nagelsmann’s resignation, the DFB has announced its intention to seek talks with Jurgen Klopp regarding the vacant head coach position. Klopp has reportedly signaled his general willingness to take on the role. Reports suggest that the former Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool manager, who has been working as a pundit for German TV during the World Cup, is “fundamentally willing” to replace Nagelsmann.

Julian Nagelsmann, left, lasted three years as Germany’s head coach and is now set to be replaced by Jürgen Klopp, whose last such job came at Liverpool in 2024.Photograph: Daniel Karmann, kerstin Joensson/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. He subsequently took on the role of head of global soccer for Red Bull. According to one report, his current contract includes a special exit clause that would allow him to leave to take up the Germany job if approached.

DFB sporting director Rudi Voller acknowledged Nagelsmann’s decision, stating, “Julian’s decision deserves our respect, because he’s taking responsibility where he’d like to continue shaping things, and putting the national team as a whole above himself.” He added that Nagelsmann remains an excellent coach.

Team Responsibility and Future Outlook

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich stated that the team must take responsibility for their early exit from the tournament. Nagelsmann’s tactical decisions during his tenure included playing Kimmich as a right-back instead of his usual midfield role and recalling 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, despite Oliver Baumann having played in all six World Cup qualifiers.

The DFB’s leadership, including Neuendorf, Voller, and managing director Andreas Rettig, held discussions to address the team’s performance. They collectively agreed that the team’s showing at the World Cup did not meet expectations. The federation plans to calmly discuss the reasons why the team could not demonstrate its quality and failed to meet the expectations of German football fans. The DFB has made it clear that they “cannot and will not simply move on as if nothing has happened” after a setback of this magnitude.

The DFB will now proceed with discussions with Jurgen Klopp to potentially lead the national team. Nagelsmann’s contract was initially set to expire after Euro 2024, but it was later extended to this year’s World Cup and then to Euro 2028.

Group stage concludes with crucial matchups

The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is set to conclude on Saturday, June 27, with action from Groups J, K, and L. This day marks the final opportunity for teams to secure their spots before the knockout rounds begin, with several groups still having undecided outcomes for advancement and seeding.

In Group L, England will face Panama in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at 5 p.m. ET. England aims to clinch the group with a victory, especially if Ghana loses to Croatia. A win for England combined with a better goal differential than Ghana would also secure their top spot. Thomas Tuchel‘s side is looking to regain momentum after a 0-0 draw against Ghana in their previous match. Harry Kane will have another chance to potentially break Gary Lineker‘s all-time World Cup goals record for England.

Meanwhile, Panama, already eliminated from the knockout stage, will be playing for its first-ever World Cup win in its second tournament appearance. The team has played hard in its earlier matches, including a 1-0 loss to Ghana and a 1-0 defeat to Croatia. Panama is still seeking its first goal of the tournament.

Ghana and Croatia battle for advancement

Also in Group L, Croatia will play Ghana at 5 p.m. ET in Philadelphia. The winner of this match will secure at least second place and automatic qualification to the Round of 32. If England fails to win against Panama, the winner of the Croatia versus Ghana match would determine the group winner.

Ghana enters this game after a 0-0 draw with England, showcasing a compact defense and dangerous counterattack. Under coach Carlos Queiroz, Ghana has not conceded a goal in the World Cup so far. Croatia, on the other hand, had a challenging start, including a 4-2 loss to England and a hard-fought 1-0 win against Panama. Veteran midfielder Luka Modrić, 40, and Mateo Kovačić, 32, will be key for Croatia in breaking down Ghana‘s defense.

Group K and J finales

In Group K, a highly anticipated match between Colombia and Portugal will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET in Miami. Colombia has already qualified for the Round of 32 and needs a win or a draw to secure first place in the group. Portugal needs a win to claim the group title. Portugal‘s Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, recently scored two goals in a 5-0 win against Uzbekistan, ending a scoring slump in major tournaments and becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups.

The other Group K match features DR Congo against Uzbekistan at 7:30 p.m. ET in Atlanta. Both teams are still in contention but require a win and assistance from other results to advance. DR Congo needs a win, a Portugal loss, and a better goal differential than Portugal to clinch a knockout spot. An Uzbekistan win would put them in contention for a third-place spot, though they would need a significant goal differential advantage.

For Group J, Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, has already secured its spot in the Round of 32 and won the group. They will play Jordan at 10 p.m. ET in Dallas, with Jordan already eliminated. Lionel Scaloni, Argentina‘s coach, may make changes to the squad, potentially resting key players like Messi.

The final match in Group J will see Austria face Algeria in Kansas City, Missouri. Second place in the group is on the line, with the winner advancing. A draw could leave both teams waiting to see if they qualify as one of the best third-place finishers. The team that finishes second will likely face Spain in the Round of 32, while a third-place team that advances could potentially play England, Egypt, Colombia, or Portugal.

Match Overview and Early Play

The World Cup 2026 group stage match between Croatia and Ghana saw an early period of play characterised by a cautious approach from both teams. In the 8th minute, neither side appeared committed to consistently sending players forward to attack. This led to a slow pace, with one observer noting it felt like a training game where the objective was to avoid entering the opposition box.

Croatia, managed by Zlatko Dalic, began the match in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Ghana, under manager Carlos Queiroz, adopted a 4-1-4-1 formation. Early in the game, Croatia was seen casually passing the ball, while Ghana had limited possession. The initial minutes suggested that a draw might be a suitable outcome for both teams.

Around the 12th minute, the game’s slow tempo was highlighted, with minimal exertion from players. This prompted a comment that a hydration break would be unnecessary given the mild weather conditions. An optimistic pass by Luckassen went out for a goal-kick, further illustrating the lack of attacking penetration.

Developing Action and Player Performances

The 18th minute saw a significant moment when Croatia gained possession in midfield. Budimir drove forward, and Vlasic received the ball at the edge of the box, firing a shot that struck the outside of the post before going wide. This marked one of the more direct attacking plays in the early stages.

Later, in the 22nd minute, Croatia was awarded a free-kick approximately 35 yards from goal. Luka Modric took the free-kick, swinging it into the box after a brief delay due to jostling among players. Pongracic headed the ball over the bar.

As the first half progressed, Ghana had a throw-in high on the left in the 40th minute. Instead of immediately advancing, they moved the ball backward. However, the ball eventually returned, allowing Antoine Semenyo to drive into the box and fire a shot just wide of the goal.

The second half began with Fatawu making an impact for Ghana. In the 47th minute, he attacked down the right wing, cut inside, and delivered a dipping shot that went just over the bar. Minutes later, in the 51st minute, Fatawu again got down the right to the byline and sent a cross towards Semenyo, but it was slightly ahead of the Manchester City player and cleared at the back post.

In the 57th minute, Sulemana showcased a good touch on the left wing before delivering the ball into a dangerous area. However, Modric anticipated the play and intervened, putting the ball out for a corner. The 59th minute saw Pongracic attempt a clearance that inadvertently hit Modric, causing the ball to bounce inside the box. This led to a chase involving Livakovic and Ayew, which the goalkeeper ultimately won.

Team Form and Tournament Stakes

Croatia, the 2018 runners-up and 2022 third-place finishers, have a record of three wins and one draw against African opposition in World Cup matches since 2014, including their third-place victory over Morocco. Attacker Ivan Perisic expressed confidence in his team’s record against African sides, stating that past results have been positive and he believes this match will follow a similar pattern.

Manager Zlatko Dalic acknowledged that Croatia’s recent performances have not been at their best. He noted that the team has made uncharacteristic mistakes in passing and possession, areas where they were previously strong. Dalic emphasised the need for the team to raise their level of play and concentration. Perisic also mentioned that Ghana is a compact and capable team, and while they have played with a low block in previous matches, Croatia must be prepared for various tactical approaches.

Heading into the final Group L matchday, England and Ghana both have four points, while Croatia has three points. Panama has been eliminated. Croatia likely needs a draw against Ghana to secure a spot in the last 32. Luka Modric, who made his 200th international appearance in a previous match, is yet to fully find his rhythm in this tournament. Carlos Queiroz, Ghana’s manager, is known for his teams’ defensive discipline and organisation.

Croatia’s recent form includes a 4-2 loss to England and a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama, secured by Ante Budimir’s 54th-minute goal. The performance of goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was crucial in the win against Panama. Ivan Perisic is 37 years old, and Luka Modric is 40 years old.

One fan observed Ghana’s goalkeeper collecting a cross without pressure and holding the ball for an extended period in the 8th minute, which they considered an unusual tactic for such an early stage of the game. Another fan noted that Ghana supporters behind them were counting passes to reach 100 before halftime. The rain had stopped at the stadium during the game.

By Aarav Reddy — 27 June 2026 — 4 min read

England and Panama faced each other at the New York New Jersey Stadium, home to the Jets and Giants, in a World Cup 2026 group stage match. The game, played in heavy rain, began after a moment of silence to honour those who lost their lives in the Venezuela earthquakes. Both teams played in their second-choice kits, with Panama in white and England in red.

England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed confidence in his team, highlighting their preparation and strong, offensive squad. He noted that Declan Rice was rested due to a knock and a yellow card, with Morgan Rogers stepping into an attack-minded midfield role. Jude Bellingham played in the 8 position, and Morgan Rogers in the 10 position. Tuchel also mentioned managing Rice’s minutes.

England made five changes from their goalless draw against Ghana earlier in the week. Jarell Quansah came in at right-back for Reece James, who is dealing with a minor hamstring injury and did not travel with the squad to New Jersey. Nico O’Reilly reclaimed the left-back spot from Djed Spence. Up front, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford started, replacing Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon.

Panama, coming off a 1-0 defeat to Croatia, made three changes to their starting XI. Fidel Escobar and Jorge Gutiérrez replaced Jiovany Ramos and César Blackman in defence. In attack, José Fajardo made way for Tomás Rodríguez. Adalberto Carrasquilla, a key playmaker, has yet to play in this World Cup but is expected to feature at some point.

Early game action and possession

Panama kicked off the match, with Tomás Rodríguez having an early opportunity to shoot from 20 yards, which was saved by Jordan Pickford. England quickly established dominance in possession, holding nearly 70% of the ball in the opening minutes. Despite this, England had only one shot on goal early in the game.

In the 5th minute, Marcus Rashford played a ball for Jude Bellingham breaking into the box, but Jose Cordoba cleared it for a corner. Moments later, in the 8th minute, Rashford cut in from the left and struck a low shot towards the bottom left, which Orlando Mosquera saved, turning it around the post. Anderson‘s subsequent delivery caused the keeper to flap, but Saka’s shot went wide.

Bukayo Saka was active on the right flank, nearly dispossessing Jorge Gutiérrez, who then drew a foul. Nico O’Reilly probed down the left for England, while Yoel Barcenas advanced down the right for Panama, leading to a free kick after Konsa was penalised for holding his shirt. Panama showed willingness to push forward on both flanks.

Harry Kane, aiming to become England’s all-time World Cup scoring leader, was also involved, dropping deep and attempting a long diagonal pass to Saka. England has already guaranteed qualification for the knockout stages after Spain‘s victory over Uruguay. They entered the final matchday atop Group L on goal differential, with Ghana and Croatia close behind. Panama has been eliminated from the tournament.

Group L standings and other matches

The World Cup group stage concluded with matches in Groups J, K, and L. In Group L, Croatia faced Ghana in another crucial fixture. England secured their spot in the Round of 32 regardless of the outcome against Panama, but a win would help them secure the group and potentially an easier path in the knockout stage.

In other matches, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Portugal played Colombia for the top spot in Group K, with Colombia needing a win or a draw to secure first place. DR Congo met Uzbekistan, with both teams needing a win to remain in the tournament. The France national team manager, Didier Deschamps, rejoined the squad for their Round of 32 match against Sweden in New Jersey after leaving for a family matter.

Scotland‘s chances of advancing as one of the best third-place teams were slim, requiring specific results in other group matches, including Austria beating Algeria by two or more goals, Ghana beating Croatia by three or more goals, and Uzbekistan beating or drawing with DR Congo. England is considered a significant favorite against Panama, with an over/under of 3.5 goals for the match.

World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Commences

The World Cup 2026 group stage is nearing its conclusion, with the knockout rounds and potential paths to the final on July 19 beginning to emerge. The tournament’s expansion to 48 teams includes a Round of 32 before the traditional Last 16 stage. This new format means the eight best third-placed teams from the group stage will join the 24 group winners and runners-up in the knockout phase.

As of Friday, June 26, 19 teams had secured their places in the knockout phase. The competition for the remaining spots, particularly among third-placed teams, is intense, with goal difference potentially playing a decisive role. Teams with four points are practically assured of progress, while those with three points have a 43.8% chance of advancing, according to tournament simulations.

Several teams have already confirmed their spots in the Round of 32. These include Mexico as Group A winners, South Africa as Group A runners-up, Switzerland as Group B winners, and Canada as Group B runners-up. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ecuador, and Sweden have also secured their progression as some of the best third-placed teams.

Other confirmed qualifiers include Brazil (Group C winners), Morocco (Group C runners-up), United States (Group D winners), Australia (Group D runners-up), Germany (Group E winners), Ivory Coast (Group E runners-up), Netherlands (Group F winners), Japan (Group F runners-up), Argentina (Group J winners), Colombia (Group K top-two), France (Group I top-two), and Norway (Group I top-two).

Confirmed Last 32 Fixtures

The schedule for the Round of 32 features several confirmed matchups. On Sunday, June 28, South Africa will play Canada in Los Angeles, USA. The following day, Monday, June 29, will see Brazil take on Japan in Houston, USA, and Germany face a third-placed team from Group A/B/C/D/F in Foxborough, USA.

Tuesday, June 30, includes a match between the Netherlands and Morocco in Guadalupe, Mexico. Also on that day, Ivory Coast will play the Group I runners-up in Arlington, USA, and the Group I winners will meet a third-placed team from Group C/D/F/G/H in New Jersey, USA. Mexico will also be in action against a third-placed team from Group C/E/F/H/I in Mexico City, Mexico.

The matches continue into Wednesday, July 1, with the Group L winners playing a third-placed team from Group E/H/I/J/K in Atlanta, USA. The United States will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara, USA, and the Group G winners will play a third-placed team from Group A/E/H/I/J in Seattle, USA.

On Thursday, July 2, the Group K runners-up will meet the Group L runners-up in Toronto, Canada. The Group H winners will play the Group J runners-up in Los Angeles, USA, and Switzerland will face a third-placed team from Group E/F/G/I/J in Vancouver, Canada.

The Round of 32 concludes on Friday, July 3, with Argentina playing the Group H runners-up in Miami, USA. The Group K winners will compete against a third-placed team from Group D/E/I/J/L in Kansas City, USA, and the Group D runners-up will play the Group G runners-up in Dallas, USA.

tournament visualization Credit: skysports.com

Routes to the Final and Key Matchups

While there are still many potential outcomes, early projections suggest some significant matchups in the later stages. France and Germany are currently on course for a Last 16 encounter, as are Portugal and Spain. The path for teams like England is also becoming clearer.

If England tops Group L, their Last 32 match on Wednesday, July 1, would be against a third-placed team from Group E, H, I, J, or K. As it stands, England is projected to face Ecuador in the Last 32. Should they advance, a potential Last 16 tie could be against a third-placed qualifier or co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City on Monday, July 6.

Further into the tournament, Brazil could be potential quarter-final opponents for England on Saturday, July 11, with holders Argentina possibly awaiting in the semi-finals. A repeat of Euro 2024, featuring England versus Spain, could occur in the final.

Scotland’s hopes of progressing to the Last 32 as one of the top eight third-placed sides are currently uncertain. They are positioned eighth in the third-place table and face a risk of elimination once the group stage concludes. Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Panama, Qatar, Czech Republic, and Curacao have already been eliminated from the tournament.

The final group matches for Group G and Group H are scheduled for Saturday, June 27, with all teams in these groups still having a chance to qualify.

Group Stage Standings and Results

In Group A, Mexico finished with nine points, while South Africa secured four points. South Korea must await their fate in the third-place table, but Czech Republic is out. Switzerland topped Group B with seven points, and Canada secured four points. Bosnia-Herzegovina, also with four points, is in a strong position to advance as a best third-placed team, while Qatar has been knocked out.

Brazil and Morocco both progressed from Group C with seven points each. Scotland’s hopes of qualifying as a best third-placed team are diminishing, and Haiti has been eliminated. In Group D, the United States secured six points, and Australia finished with four points. Paraguay, also with four points, is expected to qualify as a third-placed team.

Germany and Ivory Coast both secured six points in Group E, with Ecuador advancing as a best third-placed team with four points. Curacao has been eliminated. Netherlands topped Group F with seven points, and Japan finished second with five points. Sweden is guaranteed to qualify as a third-placed side with four points and zero goal difference.

Group G remains open, with Egypt currently leading with four points, followed by Belgium and Iran with two points each. New Zealand has one point. In Group H, Spain leads with four points, while Cape Verde and Uruguay both have two points. Saudi Arabia has one point. The final matches for these groups will determine their qualifiers.

In Group I, France and Norway both have six points and have advanced. Argentina leads Group J with six points. Colombia has advanced from Group K with six points. England currently leads Group L with four points, ahead of Ghana, also with four points, and Croatia with three points. Panama has zero points.

Brazil secures knockout stage spot

Brazil has advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup following a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. The match saw Vinicius Junior score twice, contributing to Brazil topping their group with seven points. This game also marked the return of Neymar, who made his first appearance for Brazil in three years.

The match took place at Miami Stadium, where 64,478 fans witnessed Brazil’s performance. Morocco secured the second spot in the group after a 4-2 win against Haiti.

Vinicius Junior has been a consistent scorer in the tournament, with four goals so far, placing him alongside players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, and one goal behind Lionel Messi.

Match highlights and Scotland’s challenge

Scotland’s boss, Stephen Clark, anticipated an aggressive start from Brazil. Brazil scored their first goal within seven minutes when Scott McKenna failed to clear the ball, allowing Rayan to set up Vinicius Junior, who then scored into an open net.

Brazil nearly extended their lead to 2-0 when Vinicius Junior again took the ball from Jack Hendry and scored. However, the goal was overturned after a VAR review indicated a foul by the Brazilian player. Throughout the first half, Brazil maintained an aggressive approach, while Scotland struggled to convert set-piece opportunities, ending the half without any shots on target.

Brazil’s second goal came just before half-time. Bruno Guimaraes crossed the ball to the far post, where Vinicius Junior headed in his second goal of the match. In the second half, Brazil continued to press, securing their third goal when Guimaraes provided his second assist, setting up Matheus Cunha for his third goal of the tournament.

The largest cheer of the evening was for Neymar, as Carlo Ancelotti brought the player on for his first appearance since October 2023. Scotland’s attacking efforts were minimal, with goalkeeper Alisson maintaining a clean sheet for Brazil by denying a late chance.

Scotland’s qualification hopes

Following their 3-0 defeat by Brazil, Scotland’s direct qualification for the last 32 is no longer possible. Their hopes now rest on progressing as one of the eight best third-placed teams. This means they may have to wait until Sunday to confirm their qualification for the knockout stages for the first time.

Out of the 12 teams finishing third in their groups, eight will advance. If teams are level on points in the third-place standings, goal difference will be the deciding factor. Scotland’s goal difference currently stands at -3 after the loss to Brazil.

According to Opta, teams with three points and a -3 goal difference have a 42% chance of reaching the last 32. Scotland’s chances were further impacted by South Africa’s win over South Korea and Ecuador’s victory against Germany.

Scotland needs at least four teams to perform worse than them in the remaining group stage matches. There are eight groups left to play. Some of the scenarios Scotland needs to occur include:

On Thursday, Sweden losing to Japan by four or more goals in Group F.

In Group D, if Paraguay and Australia, both on three points, play each other, Scotland needs Paraguay to lose by two or more goals, or Australia to be beaten by at least four goals.

On Friday, a draw between Senegal and Iraq in Group I, or Iraq beating Senegal by no more than two goals.

Also on Friday, Uruguay losing to Spain in Group H, and Iran losing to Egypt in Group G.

On Saturday, Croatia losing to Ghana by at least three goals in Group L.

In Group K, a draw between DR Congo and Uzbekistan, or Uzbekistan winning by no more than three goals.

In Group J, similar to Group D, if Austria and Algeria are both on three points, Scotland needs Algeria to lose by two or more goals, or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals.

By Aarav Reddy — 25 June 2026 — 3 min read

England played to a 0-0 draw against Ghana in their second World Cup Group L match on Tuesday, a result that leaves both teams in contention for the next phase. The draw, however, was seen as a disappointment for Thomas Tuchel’s side, particularly after their initial 4-2 victory over Croatia. Ghana, coming off a 1-0 win against Panama in their opening match, adopted a defensive strategy from the start, aiming to nullify England’s attacking play.

During the match, which was played in a constant drizzle, England maintained almost 80% possession in the first half but struggled to create clear opportunities. Ghana’s players crowded around England captain Harry Kane and other attacking players, limiting their access to dangerous positions. The first 45 minutes of this game marked the first instance in the current World Cup where neither side registered a shot on target.

Tuchel’s Tactical Considerations

Thomas Tuchel had anticipated a well-organised Ghana team, led by coach Carlos Queiroz, who has experience with English football from his time as assistant manager at Manchester United. England’s assistant coach, Anthony Barry, noted at halftime that Ghana was defending “deep, deep, deep, probably deeper than we expected,” emphasising the need for patience from England.

To try and break the deadlock, Tuchel introduced several substitutions. Bukayo Saka and Nico O’Reilly entered the game in the 65th minute, followed by Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze less than 10 minutes later. Marcus Rashford was also brought on later in the match. Despite these changes, England struggled to find a breakthrough.

Ghana, known for their late goal against Panama, posed a threat on the counter-attack through the pace of Antoine Semenyo and substitute Prince Kwabena Adu. However, England had the best chance of the game in the 86th minute when O’Reilly’s header hit the crossbar, and Kane sent the rebound over.

Potential Line-up Changes for Panama

Following the draw, there is speculation about potential changes to England’s starting XI for their upcoming match against Panama. Panama has already been eliminated from the World Cup after losing both their games, meaning they will finish at the bottom of their group based on the head-to-head rule.

One area where changes are anticipated is on the wings. Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke’s performance against Ghana was not considered positive enough, with concerns raised about their attacking directness and crossing quality. This could open the door for Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford to start, as they have reportedly made an impact when coming on as substitutes in previous games. If Saka is fit, he is expected to play on the right, with Rashford on the left.

Another potential change is at left-back, with Nico O’Reilly possibly returning to the starting line-up in place of Djed Spence. O’Reilly’s reintroduction in the previous match seemed to add creativity and quality to England’s left flank. Additionally, John Stones could be brought back into the defence, potentially replacing Ezri Konsa, due to some defensive concerns observed against Ghana.

Despite the draw, England remains at the top of their group and is still in a position to win it. The team will need to secure a victory against Panama to ensure their progression in the tournament.

Image showing BBC Sport app features for World Cup 2026 Credit: bbc.com

Mindset and Midfield Stability

The match against Panama is expected to present a similar challenge to the Ghana game, with Panama likely to defend deep. This will require England to change their mindset, showing more urgency by moving the ball quicker and taking more risks to break down a compact defence. The focus will be on forward passing rather than opting for sideways or backward passes.

However, the midfield partnership of Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson is expected to remain unchanged, provided Rice is fit. Harry Kane is also anticipated to retain his place in the team, given the importance of winning the upcoming match. The World Cup has passed its halfway stage, and despite the recent draw, England is considered part of the excitement of the tournament, alongside teams like the USA, France, Argentina, and Spain. The draw with Ghana was on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

Key moments

Neymar Jr.’s aspirations for the 2026 World Cup are hanging by a thread as he was left off the roster for upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia. The Brazilian superstar has not played for his national team since suffering a serious knee injury on October 17, 2023. With the World Cup set to kick off on June 13, 2026, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, the clock is ticking for Neymar.

Despite his absence from the national squad, Neymar has shown glimpses of his former self since returning to Santos FC. In just five matches, he has scored three goals and provided two assists. However, his missed appearance in the Santos vs. Mirassol match has left Brazil’s coaching staff disappointed, raising further doubts about his readiness for the World Cup.

Brazil’s head coach, Carlos Ancelotti, has confirmed that Danilo Luiz da Silva will be included in the final 26-man roster for the tournament. Ancelotti stated, “Danilo will be among the nine defenders. We now have a very clear idea; I have the lineup pretty much set for the first match, and also the lineup pretty much set for the final roster.” This clarity contrasts sharply with Neymar’s uncertain status.

The final World Cup roster will be announced on May 18, 2026, and Neymar’s chances of making the cut are dwindling. Brazil is grouped with Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland, and the team will need all its star players to advance. Neymar’s upcoming match against Flamengo on April 5 is seen as crucial for his selection prospects. As one source noted, “The game against Flamengo could be a make-or-break for the forward’s prospect of making it into the squad.”

Details remain unconfirmed regarding Neymar’s fitness and performance in this pivotal match. Ancelotti has made it clear that he will only include Neymar if he is fully fit and free from injury issues before the squad call-up. This adds pressure on the forward to prove his readiness in the coming weeks.

At 34, Danilo Luiz da Silva is also facing scrutiny, but his consistent performance this season, logging 452 minutes, has solidified his place in the team. Meanwhile, Neymar’s injury history raises questions about his ability to contribute effectively on the world stage.

As the World Cup approaches, the Brazilian football community is left anxiously awaiting updates on Neymar’s condition. His absence would be a significant blow to Brazil’s chances, as the team looks to reclaim glory on the international stage. The spotlight is on Neymar, and time is running out.

With the tournament just months away, fans and analysts alike are left to ponder: will Neymar Jr. be fit enough to don the national colors once again? Only time will tell.

Eshan Malinga has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 due to a shoulder injury sustained during a T20I series against England. The 25-year-old fast bowler’s absence is a significant blow for Sri Lanka, who are looking to replicate their 2014 World Cup success.

In his place, Pramod Madushan has been approved as a replacement for the tournament. Madushan brings experience to the squad, having played 13 One Day Internationals and eight Twenty20 Internationals.

Sri Lanka’s updated squad now includes Madushan as they prepare for their campaign in Group B, which features tough competitors like Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe.

The team’s first match is set against Ireland on February 8 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Fans are eager to see how the squad adapts without Malinga’s presence on the field.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of Malinga’s injury and his recovery timeline. As the tournament approaches, the Sri Lankan team will need to rally and find strength in their new lineup.

With the stakes high, Sri Lanka aims to make a strong impression in the tournament, hoping to advance beyond the group stage and vie for the title once again.

As the cricketing world watches closely, the impact of Malinga’s absence will be felt, but the team is determined to rise to the challenge.
