വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ: Coconut Oil Prices in Kerala Hit by Market Manipulation

Coconut prices have dropped significantly in Kerala, affecting both farmers and traders. Despite this, middlemen in southern Kerala are selling coconuts at inflated rates, causing financial strain on consumers.

Key price changes:

  • The price of green coconuts decreased from 78 rupees per kilogram to 42 rupees.
  • Dried coconut prices fell to 52 rupees per kilogram.
  • Copra prices dropped from 200 rupees to 150 rupees per kilogram.
  • Coconut oil prices fell from over 500 rupees per liter to 260 rupees.

The current heatwave has led to a sudden increase in coconut supply. Farmers are facing a severe financial crisis due to these price drops. In northern Kerala, green coconuts sell for around 40-42 rupees per kilogram, while in southern districts they cost between 65-70 rupees.

The government is being urged to intervene to stabilize prices and support farmers. Increased production in Tamil Nadu has contributed to the price drop in Kerala. Export disruptions to the Gulf due to regional conflicts have affected coconut availability.
