Venkatesh Iyer has been signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for ₹7 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, marking a significant move after his mixed performance in IPL 2025.
Last season, Iyer played for Kolkata Knight Riders, where he contributed to their IPL 2025 championship win despite scoring only 142 runs at an average of 20.28.
Mo Bobat, RCB’s director of cricket, emphasized the value of Iyer, stating, “Adding a player of Venky’s quality, experience, and calibre is a no-brainer.” This acquisition aims to bolster RCB’s competitive edge.
In a parallel development, Iyer has also been retained by Indore Pink Panthers for ₹12.50 lakh, making him the most expensive player in MPL 2026. He has been reappointed as the captain of the team.
MPL 2026 is set to take place in Indore following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League, showcasing Iyer’s dual role in both leagues.
Sandeep Jain, a representative from Indore Pink Panthers, remarked, “Retaining a dynamic and experienced player like Venkatesh Iyer at the highest price is a strategic decision.” This highlights Iyer’s importance in the competitive landscape of Indian cricket.
Bobat also noted the necessity of competition for places within the RCB squad, indicating that Iyer’s signing is part of a broader strategy to enhance team performance.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding how Iyer will adapt to his new role at RCB after a challenging season, but expectations are high for his contributions in the upcoming IPL season.
