Weather Jammu: Heavy Rain and Snowfall Expected

The Union government recently announced the installation of an Automatic Weather Station in Jammu and Kashmir as part of Mission Mausam Phase-II. This initiative aims to enhance India’s meteorological infrastructure and ensure better climate resilience in regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

As the weather situation evolves, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are expected to intensify between March 28 and 30, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the region, predicting a 65% chance of precipitation in Srinagar on March 28.

Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–50 km/h are likely to sweep across Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, adding to the weather’s severity. Meteorologists anticipate a temperature drop of 3–5°C in hill stations following the precipitation.

Travel disruptions are likely, particularly in mountainous regions, as snowfall may affect high-altitude passes. Observers are closely monitoring the situation, especially as a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact Northwest India from the night of March 28.

Currently, the IMD operates 1,008 Automatic Weather Stations across the country, with 17 located in Jammu and Kashmir. The addition of one more station will bolster weather monitoring capabilities in the region.

Officials are urging residents to prepare for the adverse weather conditions and to stay updated on travel advisories. The IMD’s forecasts indicate that the weather could remain unsettled for up to 48 hours following the onset of the disturbance.

As the situation develops, the IMD continues to provide updates and guidance to ensure safety and preparedness among the local population.
