The Punjab Assembly session erupted into chaos on Labour Day as opposition members demanded an alcohol test for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Heated confrontations ensued, leading to multiple walkouts from various parties.
Opposition MLAs made the demand during a special session convened to honor workers. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan rejected the request for an alcohol test. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa supported the call, insisting on tests for all MLAs.
The controversy ignited when Mann objected to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira using a mobile phone during proceedings. This prompted further tensions between AAP and Congress members.
The AAP government moved a confidence motion in the Assembly, which passed unanimously despite the uproar. The Congress staged a walkout amid ongoing chaos, followed by exits from BJP and Akali Dal MLAs.
BJP leader Sunil Jakhar argued for breath analyzer tests for all legislators present. Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal accused Mann of appearing in the assembly ‘drunk’. The Speaker dismissed calls for immediate dope tests on Mann and all MLAs.
Amidst this turmoil, Aman Arora criticized Congress remarks as baseless and damaging to public trust. The session aimed to honor Punjab’s working class but was marred by political tensions.
