France and Spain are set to meet in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday. Didier Deschamps, the coach for France, has described the upcoming match as potentially “spectacular.” This fixture will determine which of the two European football giants advances to Sunday’s final.
Both teams have previously faced each other in significant competitions. Spain defeated France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024. Additionally, Spain secured a victory over Les Bleus in a high-scoring Nations League last-four encounter last year.
Deschamps’ Perspective and French Ambitions
Deschamps, who is scheduled to step down after the tournament following 14 years in charge, stated that past results are not a focus. “The past is in the past,” he commented, adding that France is now at “another level” and aims to reach the final. If France wins in Texas, they will become only the third country to achieve three consecutive World Cup final appearances, a feat previously managed by West Germany between 1982 and 1990, and Brazil from 1994 to 2002.
The French coach, who captained his nation to a World Cup title in 1998 and managed them to another in 2018 before a penalty shootout loss in the 2022 final, suggested that Spain might be considered favourites for the semi-final. He highlighted Spain’s defensive record, noting they have conceded only one goal in six matches. Despite this, Deschamps anticipates an exciting contest, acknowledging the offensive quality of both sides.
Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s coach, downplayed the favourite tag, emphasizing that both are strong national teams. He mentioned that the pressure to perform well for their country is inherent, regardless of who is deemed favourite. De la Fuente also quoted Roman general Julius Caesar, stating, “You can’t win without suffering,” a sentiment he agrees with, believing that achieving significant goals requires preparation for hardship.
Key Players to Watch
Kylian Mbappe, the captain of France, has been a standout performer in the tournament, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. His goal tally places him alongside Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Mbappe has scored in every knockout round so far, showcasing his significant threat to opposing defences.

Another crucial player for France is Michael Olise, who has registered five assists in the tournament. Although he has not scored, his ability to create opportunities and his partnership with Mbappe have been notable. Ousmane Dembele has also been impactful, scoring five goals in the competition, including a hat-trick in a group stage match. The combined efforts of Dembele and Mbappe have resulted in 13 goals for France in this World Cup.

For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old player, is considered a key attacking threat. He has scored one goal in the tournament, which came during a 4-0 group stage victory against Saudi Arabia. Yamal was also recognised as player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final win over Belgium and has recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament. He previously scored against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain’s scoring with four goals in the World Cup. He has a history of scoring important goals, including an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final. Mikel Merino, an Arsenal midfielder, could also play a significant role from the bench, having scored late winners in two matches after coming on as a substitute against Portugal and Belgium.
