Is there really an LPG gas shortage in India? The answer is a resounding no. The government has firmly stated that there is no shortage of LPG at any distributorship. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, emphasized, “There is no shortage of LPG at any distributorship.” This assertion comes amid rising concerns and panic ordering by consumers.
To back this up, India’s domestic refinery production has ramped up by 40 percent, bringing daily LPG output to 50 thousand metric tonnes. Oil companies are successfully delivering over 50 lakh cylinders every day, a significant feat considering the recent spike in demand.
Initially, the demand for cylinders surged to 89 lakh due to panic buying, but it has since normalized to 50 lakh. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that all retail fuel outlets have sufficient supplies of LPG. Furthermore, India has enough petrol, diesel, and LPG stock for nearly 60 days, ensuring that consumers can rely on stable supply.
India’s total storage capacity is impressive, holding enough crude oil and fuel for about 74 days. Approximately 26 states have allocated 22,000 tons of commercial LPG nationwide, demonstrating a robust distribution network. The government has urged citizens not to be misled by a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation.”
Despite the current situation, every Indian refinery is reportedly running at over 100 percent utilization, further ensuring that supply meets demand. The government reassures the public, stating, “There is no need to panic.” This message is critical as misinformation can lead to unnecessary anxiety among consumers.
India meets more than 40 percent of its crude imports and 90 percent of its LPG imports from West Asian countries. This reliance on imports highlights the importance of maintaining stable international relations to secure energy supplies. However, the current domestic production capabilities have proven resilient in the face of increased demand.
As the situation unfolds, the government continues to monitor supply levels closely. While the current data suggests stability, the ongoing geopolitical climate may influence future supply chains. For now, consumers can rest assured that the LPG gas shortage is a myth, with ample supplies available across the nation.
