Netherlands exit World Cup after penalty shootout
Morocco advanced to the next stage of the World Cup after defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. The match, which saw both teams score once in regular time, concluded with Morocco securing a 3-2 victory from the spot. This result means the Netherlands have exited the tournament at the Round of 32 stage.
The game was played in Monterrey and proved to be a tense affair from the outset. The Netherlands initially took the lead in the 72nd minute through a goal from Cody Gakpo. His effort came from a loose ball in the area during a swift break forward, giving his team the initial advantage.
Gakpo’s goal was an emotional moment, with the entire Dutch squad joining him on the pitch in celebration and support. He had chosen to play despite a recent personal tragedy, and was visibly moved, pointing to the sky and being comforted by teammate Denzel Dumfries.

However, Morocco managed to equalise in the first minute of added time at the end of the contest. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a cross that Issa Diop headed in at the back post, sending the match into extra time and eventually penalties. This late goal erased the Netherlands’ lead and set the stage for the dramatic shootout.
Tactical decisions and match flow
The Netherlands’ manager, Ronald Koeman, faced scrutiny for his tactical approach to the match. Despite his team’s strong goal-scoring record in the group stage, where they scored seven times against Sweden and Japan, and three more against Tunisia, Koeman opted for a more cautious strategy. He abandoned the standard 4-3-3 formation and deployed a five-man back line, tasking them with maintaining a tight defence.
This tactical shift resulted in a scratchy and cautious display from the Netherlands, allowing Morocco to dominate possession with 70%. The Dutch side offered little threat until shortly before half-time, when Micky van de Ven’s powerful shot was tipped over by Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou. Earlier, Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen had already made crucial saves to keep his team in the game, as Morocco increased their tempo after the restart.
The match was marked by a series of niggly challenges and a tetchy atmosphere. Jan Paul van Hecke of the Netherlands was involved in several incidents during the opening period, sustaining a head injury on one occasion. The tension was also evident in the stands, with local supporters reminding the Netherlands of a past event involving a late penalty against Mexico twelve years prior. These fans joined Morocco’s contingent in booing every Dutch touch early in the game.
Penalty drama and aftermath
As the game progressed, Morocco maintained pressure, with Achraf Hakimi leading a second-half charge with several clever runs. Verbruggen made acrobatic saves from both Neil El Aynaoui and Hakimi, but Morocco struggled to find their fluent rhythm against the Dutch defensive setup. The introduction of Wout Weghorst for Brian Brobbey during a hydration break briefly revitalised the Netherlands, leading to Gakpo’s goal.
Extra time was a more subdued affair, with Verbruggen making another brilliant save to deny Soufiane Rahimi in the only significant action. The match ultimately came down to a test of nerve from 12 yards. In the shootout, both teams missed once. Verbruggen initially appeared to save Rahimi’s penalty, only for the ball to squirm in off his trailing heel. Quinten Timber shot wide, and Hakimi hit the post.
The decisive moment came when Yassine Bounou, who was also a hero in 2022, repelled the Netherlands’ fifth penalty from Crysencio Summerville. Ismael Saibari then converted his penalty, securing Morocco’s victory and allowing them to celebrate. Canada awaits Morocco in the next stage of the competition.
