The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has traditionally wrapped up before the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off. However, recent scheduling changes have led to overlaps, resulting in a significant player exodus.
In the last two seasons, the PSL has struggled with players opting for the lucrative IPL. Corbin Bosch’s switch to the IPL was the first major instance, leading to his one-year ban from the PSL after he withdrew to join the league.
As of March 2026, Blessing Muzarabani has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders from Islamabad United, while Dasun Shanaka is set to move from Lahore Qalandars to Rajasthan Royals. Additionally, Gudakesh Motie has withdrawn from the PSL and is rumored to be joining the Lucknow Super Giants.
Spencer Johnson is also expected to leave the PSL for Chennai Super Kings. This trend raises questions about the PSL’s ability to retain talent in the face of IPL’s financial allure.
Security concerns are further complicating matters, particularly for Bangladeshi players. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not confirmed the safety of its players traveling to Pakistan for the PSL 2026.
Aminul Islam, a BCB official, stated, “Definitely our cricketers are not going if there is a security concern (in PSL).” He emphasized the need for the BCB to consult with players regarding safety measures.
The BCB is prioritizing player safety, and the final decision on participation in the PSL remains pending government clearance. Details remain unconfirmed.
The PSL’s overlap with the IPL schedule has created an environment ripe for player switches, raising concerns about the league’s future viability.
As the situation unfolds, observers are keenly watching how the PSL will adapt to these challenges and whether it can maintain its competitive edge.
