The Khelo India Tribal Games, an initiative aimed at promoting sports among India’s youth, kicked off on March 25 and will run until April 3 in Chhattisgarh. This year, over 3,000 athletes from 30 states and Union Territories have gathered to showcase their skills and compete for medals.
As the games progress, Karnataka has emerged as a dominant force, currently leading the medal tally with a remarkable 21 gold medals. Following closely is Odisha, which has secured 17 golds. Chhattisgarh, the host state, has managed to collect 2 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze medals, showcasing a commendable effort in front of a home crowd.
Among the standout performances, Dasharath Talawar clinched gold in the men’s 10km race walk, while Nagini shone in the women’s 800m race, also taking home a gold medal. Such achievements highlight the competitive spirit and talent present at the games.
Gajendra Thakur, a participant who initially came for kabaddi trials, shared his journey: “I had come for kabaddi trials at SAI Training Centre in Bilaspur, but seeing my fitness, the coaches advised me to go for track events, and I am happy to get my first national-level medal at home in the Khelo India Tribal Games.” His story reflects the transformative impact of the games on young athletes.
