Vijaypat Singhania Passes Away at 87

Vijaypat Singhania died in Mumbai at the age of 87, marking the end of an era for the Raymond Group he once led.

As the former chairman, Singhania transformed Raymond into a global fashion powerhouse, expanding its reach into synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, and cement.

He held a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon, soaring to 69,000 feet, and set a speed-over-time endurance record for microlight aircraft in 1988.

Singhania, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan, served as chairman of the governing council of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, from 2007 to 2012.

In 2000, he transferred his entire 37 percent stake in the company to his son, Gautam Singhania, ensuring the family’s legacy continued.

His contributions to aviation were recognized when he was appointed honorary air commodore by the Indian Air Force in 1994.

In 2006, he took on the ceremonial role of sheriff of Mumbai, further cementing his status as a prominent figure in the city.

Raymond Group described him as “a visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality, whose legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations.”

Singhania’s journey began when he took over the Raymond Group in 1980, and his impact on the textile industry remains profound.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the circumstances of his passing, but his legacy is expected to resonate in the business community for years to come.
