On May 4, 2026, Narendra Modi’s BJP won the West Bengal assembly elections, marking a historic shift. This is the first time the BJP has secured victory in a state previously dominated by the TMC.
The BJP is projected to win more than 205 out of 294 seats. The TMC had ruled West Bengal for 15 years before this election. The voter turnout was approximately 92.93%, a record high for the state.
The BJP’s victory is viewed as a significant change in India’s political landscape. It follows a controversial revision of the electoral roll, which some critics argue fueled Hindu-Muslim polarization.
Modi stated, “People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal.” Seema Das criticized TMC, saying, “Didi has lost the track and only appeases Muslims to stay in power.”
The BJP was also re-elected in Assam on the same day. Analysts note that Modi’s leadership played a crucial role in this electoral success.
The party’s win culminates a seven-year project by its leadership and cadre. The previous best performance by the BJP in West Bengal was 77 seats in 2021.
