Tuesday’s Key Fixtures
The FIFA World Cup Round of 32 continues with three significant matches scheduled for Tuesday. These games will determine which teams advance to the Round of 16. The day’s lineup includes Ivory Coast against Norway, France facing Sweden, and co-hosts Mexico playing Ecuador.
The first match sees Ivory Coast and Norway compete at Dallas Stadium in Texas. Following this, France will meet Sweden at New York/New Jersey Stadium. The final fixture of the day features Mexico hosting Ecuador at Mexico City Stadium, with the match extending into Wednesday GMT.
Ivory Coast vs Norway: A First Competitive Encounter
The clash between Ivory Coast and Norway marks their first competitive meeting. Historically, Ivory Coast has found matches against European opponents challenging in the World Cup. Conversely, Norway has a strong record against African teams, having lost only two of their 19 encounters across all competitions.
The Opta supercomputer, after 25,000 pre-match simulations, indicates Norway as the favourites to progress, winning in normal time in 56.1 percent of simulations. Ivory Coast secured victory in 21.6 percent of simulations, while a draw after 90 minutes, leading to extra time, occurred in 22.3 percent. Norway is strongly supported to reach the Round of 16, aiming to equal their best-ever World Cup finish. Ivory Coast would need to achieve a significant upset to continue their campaign.
Norway finished second in Group I, securing a 4-1 win against Iraq and a 3-2 victory over Senegal, qualifying for the Round of 32 with a group match remaining. Their only previous knockout stage appearance in a major tournament was in the 1998 World Cup, where they were eliminated by Italy in the Round of 16. Striker Erling Haaland has been a key player for Norway, scoring four goals in two matches. Captain Martin Odegaard has also contributed with two assists.
Ivory Coast, making their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage, will rely on players like Nicolas Pepe, who has scored two goals, and Amad Diallo and Franck Kessie, each with one goal. They have won only one of their last five World Cup matches against European teams. The team is known for its strong defence and dangerous attack. Norway’s defence, however, has conceded at least one goal in each group stage game and has not kept a clean sheet in five matches.

France vs Sweden: A Familiar Rivalry on a New Stage
France and Sweden have a long history, having met 23 times across various competitions, with France holding an advantage of 12 wins to Sweden’s six, and five matches ending in a draw. However, this will be their first encounter in a FIFA World Cup.
The Opta supercomputer gives France a significant edge, winning in normal time in 75.1 percent of 25,000 pre-match simulations. Sweden won in just 9.5 percent of simulations, with 15.4 percent of matches being level after 90 minutes. France, considered one of the tournament favourites, scored at least three goals in each of their three group stage games. Key players for France include Kylian Mbappé, who has scored four goals and provided an assist, and Ousmane Dembélé, also with four goals and an assist. Michael Olise has contributed three assists.

Sweden, despite having talented players like Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, has shown inconsistency, conceding seven goals in the group stage, including five goals in a loss to the Netherlands. France’s defence will need to be vigilant against Sweden’s forwards.
Mexico vs Ecuador: Co-hosts Seek Advancement
Mexico and Ecuador have previously met once in the FIFA World Cup, with Mexico securing a 2-1 victory in the group stage of the 2002 tournament. Recent encounters have been more balanced, with their last three matches ending in draws, suggesting a close contest in the Round of 32.
The Opta supercomputer gives co-hosts Mexico the advantage, winning in normal time in 47.1 percent of simulations, compared to 23.7 percent for Ecuador. A draw after 90 minutes occurred in 29.2 percent of simulations, indicating a realistic possibility of extra time. Factoring in extra time and penalties, Mexico’s chances of reaching the Round of 16 rise to 61 percent, while Ecuador has a 38.9 percent probability of progressing.
Mexico enters the knockout stage after a perfect group stage campaign, winning Group A with nine points and not conceding a goal. Five different players contributed to their six goals in the group stage. Ecuador, on the other hand, qualified for the knockout stages after a comeback win against Germany, with goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata. Ecuador’s defence, featuring players like Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié, and Joel Ordonez, has been historically strong in qualifying tournaments, allowing only five goals and keeping 13 clean sheets.
However, Ecuador’s offensive performance has been a concern, as they were shut out in their first two group games. This match is expected to be a battle between two strong defences, with Mexico having the home advantage and multiple scoring options. The possibility of the game being decided by penalties is considered high.
Teams Advancing and Eliminated
The tournament has already seen some surprising results. Canada defeated South Africa 1-0, Brazil beat Japan 2-1, and Paraguay stunned Germany on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Morocco also advanced by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 in Houston on Saturday. Germany’s campaign concluded with a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay, who sealed a 4-3 victory after a 1-1 draw. Following their victory, Paraguay’s President declared Tuesday a national holiday.

The Round of 32 has already delivered moments that will be remembered in World Cup history, with more dramatic encounters anticipated as teams vie for a spot in the next stage.
