Amy Hood Leads Microsoft in Employee Buyout Program

Microsoft’s introduction of a voluntary employee buyout program marks a significant shift in its operational strategy amid ongoing workforce reductions. The company expects its workforce headcount to decrease in the coming quarters.

Amy Hood indicated that the company is evolving its operations to increase pace and agility. This buyout program is available for employees whose age and years of service total 70 or more.

As of June 2025, Microsoft had 228,000 employees globally, with 125,000 in the U.S. Approximately 8,750 workers could be eligible for this buyout program.

Microsoft’s financial results show quarterly revenue of $83 billion and net income of $32 billion. The company’s AI business reached an annual revenue run rate of over $37 billion, reflecting a 123% increase.

Hood projected a 39% to 40% growth for the Azure business in the current quarter. Microsoft’s workforce changes align with broader operational shifts amid rising AI investment.

The tech industry announced 18,720 job cuts in March 2026, indicating a trend in workforce management. Microsoft has cut thousands of jobs in recent quarters as part of cost-cutting measures.
