The Karnataka government has proposed a new grading system for third language subjects in the SSLC examination, set to roll out in the 2025-26 academic year. Instead of traditional marks, students will receive grades, aiming to alleviate academic pressure.
Under the new system, grades will be awarded as follows: ‘A’ for scores between 80% and 100%, ‘B’ for 50% to 79%, and ‘C’ for up to 49%. This change applies specifically to third language and National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) subjects.
Importantly, these subjects will be considered additional on the marks card and will not impact a student’s pass or fail status. The overall SSLC examination pattern will remain unchanged, with six core subjects still carrying a total of 625 marks.
The notification regarding this proposal is currently in draft form and is open for public objections and suggestions for seven days. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reducing academic pressure while promoting skill-based and language learning.
Observers note that the shift to a grading system could significantly change how students approach their studies, particularly in third language subjects. The move is seen as a step towards modernizing the education system in Karnataka.
As the draft is open for public feedback, the government is likely to consider suggestions before finalizing the proposal. Details remain unconfirmed on how the transition will be managed and the specific implementation strategies.
