Kumaun University Implements New Faculty Evaluation System

Kumaun University has taken a significant step towards enhancing academic standards with the introduction of a comprehensive faculty evaluation system. Announced on March 24, 2026, the new system will be overseen by Nandan Singh Bisht, recently appointed as the deputy controller of examinations.

The evaluation will utilize a 100-point scale, with strict consequences for underperforming faculty. Teachers scoring below 60 percent will face withheld salary increases and may even risk compulsory retirement. Conversely, those achieving above 75 percent will be rewarded with a certificate of appreciation.

Each faculty member is now required to present at least once at a national or international conference, a move aimed at boosting research engagement. Additionally, the university has set stricter criteria for higher research degrees, such as D.Sc. and D.Litt., mandating a minimum of 12 years of experience.

In a recent meeting, the university also approved the promotion of seven teachers under the Career Advancement Scheme, reflecting a commitment to recognizing and rewarding academic contributions.

Diwan Singh Rawat emphasized the importance of these decisions, stating, “These decisions taken as a whole, represent an important initiative toward strengthening academic excellence, research quality, transparency and accountability at the university.”

This initiative comes at a time when Uttarakhand’s diverse population, including significant Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, calls for enhanced educational standards and opportunities.

The new evaluation system is expected to foster a culture of accountability among faculty, aligning with broader goals of academic integrity and excellence.

As the university implements these changes, reactions from faculty and stakeholders will be closely monitored. The potential impact on job security and academic freedom remains to be seen.

Details remain unconfirmed as the university navigates this transformative phase.
