Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona prodigy, expressed confidence ahead of Spain‘s World Cup semifinal clash against France, which follows his 19th birthday. Yamal, who celebrated his birthday recently, stated that a victory on Tuesday and a trip to New York for the final would be the ultimate present. He addressed previous comments where he suggested France, rather than Spain, should be apprehensive given past encounters.
Speaking to reporters, Yamal clarified his earlier remarks, stating, “I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It’s simply football.” He also mentioned purchasing a jewel-encrusted necklace to mark his birthday but emphasised that a win in the semifinal was his true desire. Despite having scored only once in the tournament so far, Yamal is prepared to increase his goal tally against France, viewing it as a significant challenge.
Yamal described the upcoming match as “the game everyone was waiting for” and promised a “beautiful match for the spectators.” He maintained a calm approach to the high-stakes game, stating, “There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I’m calm. I don’t feel any extra pressure; I’ll go out and play like always and give my all for the team.”
Spain’s Strategic Approach
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente outlined his team’s strategy to be on the “front foot” against France, who are considered tournament favourites. De la Fuente’s side aims to implement their possession-based style of play in what is anticipated to be a compelling contest of different footballing philosophies. Despite France coach Didier Deschamps suggesting Spain remains the favourite for the World Cup, betting markets largely favour France to secure another title.
France has advanced to the semifinals with a strong attacking display, featuring players like Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele. However, Spain has a recent history of defeating France in their last two meetings. De la Fuente is meticulously planning for the match at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He noted that his team has thoroughly analysed France, acknowledging their familiarity with each other from previous encounters.
De la Fuente highlighted the importance of imposing Spain‘s virtues and counteracting France‘s strengths. He believes that the team achieving a better balance will likely secure the victory. The coach stressed the need to focus on individual duels and to take the initiative during the game, asserting Spain‘s style of play.

Acknowledging France’s Evolution
Despite his confidence, Luis de la Fuente is aware of the formidable challenge France presents. He acknowledged that France has significantly improved since Spain‘s 5-4 victory in a UEFA Nations League semifinal in Stuttgart last year. De la Fuente stated that the upcoming match would be very different from that previous encounter, where Spain had a 5-1 lead before a late rally from France.
He emphasised the need to replicate positive aspects from past performances while correcting areas where the team did not perform well. De la Fuente noted, “We were winning 5-1, and in a few minutes they managed to make it 5-4. So we’re trying to repeat what we did well and the opposite of what we didn’t do well.” He believes that France‘s squad has matured, making them a tougher opponent now than in previous years.
“I think they are a better team, far better, because those players have grown, and what they are doing now is better than what they were doing then,” De la Fuente explained, referring to France‘s improved skills over the past two years. While controlling possession and tempo will be crucial, De la Fuente’s final message to his team will be to enjoy the unique setting and play to their full potential. The winner of this semifinal will face either Argentina or England in the World Cup final.

France’s Perspective
France star Adrien Rabiot stated that his team does not have a specific “anti-Lamine Yamal plan” for the World Cup 2026 semifinal. He clarified that France is focused on the entire Spanish team rather than concentrating on a single player. Rabiot highlighted Spain‘s overall danger, including their attacking players, ball possession, ability to find space near the box, and combination play.
Rabiot had previously commented on Yamal, suggesting the Barcelona star needed to “do more” before a Euro 2024 semifinal. When questioned about these past remarks, Rabiot indicated he did not recall them precisely but stood by his thoughts at the time. He reiterated that France is not afraid of any opponent and believes the team is in optimal condition for the semifinal, given their journey so far. The match between Spain and France is scheduled for Tuesday.
