Controversy over disciplinary decisions

England coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed confusion regarding the disciplinary process at the World Cup, following a decision by FIFA not to ban United States striker Folarin Balogun. Balogun, who received a red card during a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was expected to be suspended for the subsequent last-16 tie against Belgium. However, FIFA opted against enforcing an immediate suspension, making Balogun available to play.

This decision reportedly came after US President Donald Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the suspension. President Trump later thanked FIFA for what he described as “reversing a great injustice.”

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized the decision on social media, stating that “football must never become a playground for political power.” Blatter, who was replaced by Infantino in 2016, has frequently voiced concerns about decisions made during Infantino’s presidency.

The situation has drawn comparisons to a past incident involving Garrincha in the 1962 World Cup, where a disciplinary committee decided against an additional suspension after his red card. While that event occurred before automatic one-match suspensions were standard, the recent decision regarding Balogun is considered unprecedented in the World Cup since the introduction of automatic bans for red cards.

Tuchel questions consistency and VAR

Tuchel’s comments came after Jarell Quansah was sent off in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico. When asked if he would appeal Quansah’s ban, Tuchel questioned the consistency of FIFA’s decisions. “Where does this start and where does this end now?” Tuchel asked, adding, “Can we overturn it or not overturn it? What’s going on?”

Both Balogun and Quansah were sent off following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Quansah, a Bayer Leverkusen defender, received his red card in the 54th minute for a sliding challenge that caught Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo high on the shin. Balogun’s red card was for his foot landing on the ankle of Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic, causing it to buckle.

Apart from Balogun, the other players who have received red cards at the 2026 World Cup have served a suspension for their country’s next match. FIFA enacted a clause in its disciplinary code that allows it to “fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure.” This action appears to contradict tournament regulations, which state that a red card automatically results in suspension from the team’s subsequent match.

Tuchel believes this intervention has created uncertainty regarding the rules. He argued that Balogun’s initial red card was not justified, but acknowledged that VAR and the referee had made the decision. “Who overturns this decision and when and on what grounds? And how far does this go now? It’s just strange for me. We just want to have consistency in the decisions,” Tuchel stated.

The England coach also highlighted the VAR process in his defense of Quansah. He noted that the challenge was not initially called a foul by the referee, suggesting that VAR’s involvement led to the decision. “You cannot take decisions on a still in a football match. It’s just not possible,” Tuchel remarked, expressing disappointment over the setback for Quansah.

US head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s ruling, maintaining that Balogun’s original dismissal was unfair. Conversely, Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia expressed anger, stating he was unaware that April Fools’ Day falls in July, and the Belgian federation is reportedly reviewing its legal options.

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken also criticized FIFA’s decision, calling it a “bad, bad, bad, bad, bad decision” and expressing sympathy for the United States, suggesting that any victory would be tainted. President Trump welcomed the news of Balogun’s reprieve on social media, thanking FIFA for reversing what he called a “grave injustice.”

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4888" src="https://india-news.com.in/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-32d61e28a0bc_img-3.webp" alt="Thomas Tuchel celebrating victory over Mexico.

Reactions and implications

The decision to lift Balogun’s suspension has generated mixed reactions, with many US fans expressing satisfaction, while others, including the Belgian team, have voiced outrage. FIFA has pointed to a bylaw allowing such decisions, though it has not offered further insight into the specific reasoning. The organization also maintained that its disciplinary process is not influenced by external interventions, despite reports of President Trump’s calls to President Infantino.

Blatter’s comments on X further questioned the independence of football’s disciplinary process, asking, “Quo vadis, Fifa?” if a US President intervenes with the FIFA President and a player is cleared before a knockout match. He reiterated that red cards should be overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies, not political phone calls.

The controversy has become a significant talking point of the tournament, adding scrutiny to FIFA’s handling of disciplinary matters. The USMNT had reached its current stage in the tournament based on its own performances, with Balogun being a key player. However, the perception that the US received an unfair advantage could affect how their potential advancement is viewed globally.

The Royal Belgian Football Association has confirmed it is exploring all available options to protect the integrity of the competition following FIFA’s announcement on Sunday that Balogun’s suspension had been lifted under Article 27 of its disciplinary rules.

Nagelsmann’s Departure and Germany’s World Cup Exit

Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Germany men’s national team. This decision follows the team’s early exit from the World Cup 2026, where they were eliminated in the last 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay in Boston. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, granting his request to be relieved of his duties.

Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023, initially expressed a desire to remain in charge, stating after the match, “I’m not someone who runs away.” However, he later reflected on the situation, saying, “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation.” He added that the decision was difficult but that the team deserved a fresh start after such a disappointment.

The DFB terminated their contractual relationship with the 38-year-old former Bayern Munich boss. According to one report, Nagelsmann was offered a severance package to cut short his contract, which was set to expire in 2028. This marks Nagelsmann’s second major tournament with Germany, having previously guided them to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals as hosts, where they lost to eventual winners Spain.

Germany has not won a World Cup knockout game since being crowned champions in 2014. They failed to advance beyond the group stage in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments under previous coaches. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf stated that Germany’s performance at the World Cup did not meet their standards, and that the federation would take time to discuss the reasons behind the team’s inability to perform to their potential.

Klopp Emerges as Successor

Following Nagelsmann’s resignation, the DFB has announced its intention to seek talks with Jurgen Klopp regarding the vacant head coach position. Klopp has reportedly signaled his general willingness to take on the role. Reports suggest that the former Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool manager, who has been working as a pundit for German TV during the World Cup, is “fundamentally willing” to replace Nagelsmann.

Julian Nagelsmann, left, lasted three years as Germany’s head coach and is now set to be replaced by Jürgen Klopp, whose last such job came at Liverpool in 2024.Photograph: Daniel Karmann, kerstin Joensson/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. He subsequently took on the role of head of global soccer for Red Bull. According to one report, his current contract includes a special exit clause that would allow him to leave to take up the Germany job if approached.

DFB sporting director Rudi Voller acknowledged Nagelsmann’s decision, stating, “Julian’s decision deserves our respect, because he’s taking responsibility where he’d like to continue shaping things, and putting the national team as a whole above himself.” He added that Nagelsmann remains an excellent coach.

Team Responsibility and Future Outlook

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich stated that the team must take responsibility for their early exit from the tournament. Nagelsmann’s tactical decisions during his tenure included playing Kimmich as a right-back instead of his usual midfield role and recalling 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, despite Oliver Baumann having played in all six World Cup qualifiers.

The DFB’s leadership, including Neuendorf, Voller, and managing director Andreas Rettig, held discussions to address the team’s performance. They collectively agreed that the team’s showing at the World Cup did not meet expectations. The federation plans to calmly discuss the reasons why the team could not demonstrate its quality and failed to meet the expectations of German football fans. The DFB has made it clear that they “cannot and will not simply move on as if nothing has happened” after a setback of this magnitude.

The DFB will now proceed with discussions with Jurgen Klopp to potentially lead the national team. Nagelsmann’s contract was initially set to expire after Euro 2024, but it was later extended to this year’s World Cup and then to Euro 2028.

Spain’s World Cup Challenge

Spain is set to face Austria in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday. The match presents a significant challenge for the Spanish side, particularly given their historical performance in penalty shootouts at the tournament.

Spain has been eliminated from the last two major tournaments via penalties and has only secured one victory in five World Cup shootouts. This record adds considerable pressure as they enter the knockout stages.

Despite these concerns, Spain concluded the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup without conceding a single goal, a first for the team in the tournament’s history. They also topped Group H with two wins and a draw, extending an impressive 34-game unbeaten run in regular time.

For the match against Austria, Spain‘s coach, Luis de la Fuente, made two changes to the starting lineup. Pedro Porro and Dani Olmo were brought in, while Marcos Llorente and Mikel Merino were moved to the bench. In attack, Lamine Yamal started alongside Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal. Nico Williams was unavailable due to a leg injury. Yamal has scored one goal in three appearances for Spain in this tournament.

Austria’s Return and Team Changes

Austria, after finishing second in their group, is making their return to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since 1954. They are also contending with fitness issues among key players.

Captain David Alaba and striker Marko Arnautovic both picked up knocks in their recent 3-3 draw against Algeria. For the match against Spain, Austria made three changes to their squad. Kevin Danso, Paul Wanner, and Michael Gregoritsch were included in the starting lineup, with Phillip Mwene, Philipp Lienhart, and Marko Arnautovic placed on the bench.

The last encounter between Spain and Austria in a World Cup tournament was in 1978, where Austria secured a 2-1 victory. However, Spain has won four of the last five meetings between the two nations across all competitions.

Penalty Shootout History

The history of penalty shootouts in the FIFA World Cup highlights the significant psychological and physical demands on players. Since 1982, there have been 37 penalty shootouts in the tournament. The first such shootout occurred between West Germany and France, with West Germany winning 5-4.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar recorded the highest number of penalty shootouts in a single tournament, with five, including the final. Argentina, the defending champions, have been involved in the most penalty shootouts, participating in seven and winning the majority of them. Their shootout victories span over three decades against nations such as Yugoslavia, Italy, England, the Netherlands, and France, with their only loss coming against Germany in 2006.

Data from OptaJoe indicates that 78 per cent of penalties are scored within regulation or extra time in the FIFA World Cup. However, this conversion rate drops to 68 per cent during penalty shootouts, underscoring the increased pressure in these decisive moments. Spain‘s sole victory in a World Cup shootout was against the Republic of Ireland in the Round of 16 in 2002. They have suffered defeats in shootouts against Belgium in 1986, South Korea in 2002, Russia in 2018, and Morocco in 2022.

The winner of the match between Spain and Austria will advance to a last 16 game against the winner of the tie between Portugal and Croatia.

The match is scheduled for Friday, July 3, 2026 (Indian time).

By Aarav Reddy — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

Senegal’s FIFA World Cup journey concluded in the round of 32 following a controversial penalty decision in the final moments of their match against Belgium in Seattle on Wednesday. The “Lions of Teranga” experienced a dramatic turn of events, going from a 2-0 lead to a 3-2 defeat.

The decisive moment occurred at the end of the second period of extra time, with the score tied at 2-2 and a penalty shootout looming. Honduran referee Said Martinez awarded a penalty to Belgium after a VAR review, following a challenge by Senegal’s Lamine Camara on Belgian captain Youri Tielemans.

The platform “Archivo VAR,” which specializes in analyzing refereeing decisions, stated that VAR intervened excessively. According to their analysis, it was Tielemans who extended his foot in front of Camara, initiating the contact. The platform further noted that the incident did not warrant VAR intervention, as the Belgian player forced the contact, and the situation did not present a clear and obvious error necessary to justify the referee reviewing the decision.

The decision sparked significant controversy across social media. Many fans expressed strong opinions, with one describing it as “100% robbery” and suggesting that Senegal had been unfairly eliminated. Another fan commented that it was “never a penalty,” arguing that Camara was attempting to clear the ball when Tielemans moved into his path.

Spanish sports journalist Manolo Lama remarked on the perceived injustice, stating that “They stole the Africa Cup of Nations from them, and now they’re stealing all the solidarity with Senegal at the World Cup too.” Egyptian journalist Mohamed Saeed drew parallels to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, suggesting the penalty was a “harsh lesson” for Senegal.

After the penalty was awarded, Tielemans successfully converted it, scoring Belgium’s third goal and completing an unexpected comeback. This goal, scored in the 125th minute, marked the latest goal in the tournament’s history.

Senegal’s Habib Diarra, front, celebrates scoring their first goal with Ismail Jakobs, back, during the World Cup round of 32 soccer match between Belgium and Senegal in Seattle, Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Senegal’s Early Dominance and Late Collapse

For much of the match, Senegal appeared to be in control, holding a two-goal lead for 85 minutes and seemingly securing a spot in the round of 16. Goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr had given Senegal their advantage with just five minutes remaining in normal time.

However, Belgium mounted a late comeback with strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans, sending the match into extra time. The dramatic turn of events left Senegal’s players devastated.

Defender Krepin Diatta acknowledged the team’s failure, stating, “We were at the heart of writing the beautiful pages of the history of our football in this world. And we have to accept that we failed at our mission.” Midfielder Habib Diarra echoed this sentiment, expressing his devastation and noting that the team did not give their all for the full 90 minutes.

Belgium’s Historic Comeback

Belgium’s victory marked a significant comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit in the knockout phase of the World Cup. This was the second time in the last 11 World Cups that a team trailed by two or more goals in the knockout stage and still advanced, with Belgium achieving a similar feat against Japan in the 2018 edition.

Youri Tielemans expressed pride in his role in the comeback, particularly for scoring the last two goals. He noted that he was fouled with mere seconds remaining before the penalty shootout, leading to the spot kick after a video review, despite protests from the Senegalese players.

Senegal's Pathe Ciss #6 kneels on the pitch after Belgium were awarded a penalty during the World Cup round of 32 football match with Belgium in Seattle, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 [Manu Fernandez/AP Photo] Credit: aljazeera.com

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw chose not to interpret the referee’s decision, stating that interpretations of penalty awards can differ. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia, while happy with the win, conceded that “Senegal deserved to win.” Belgium will now face co-host USA in the round of 16, following USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Kane’s Impactful Performance

England secured their progression to the last 16 of the World Cup after a challenging match against DR Congo. The team found themselves in a difficult position after Jordan Pickford conceded a goal, putting England behind. Historically, England has not won a knockout game after falling behind since their 1966 victory against West Germany, which led to their sole World Cup title.

However, Harry Kane played a pivotal role in turning the tide. His first goal came after Declan Rice moved to right-back, a position where England appeared vulnerable following the decision to omit Trent Alexander-Arnold. Rice passed to substitute Anthony Gordon, who delivered a ball for Kane to head home. This powerful header beat a goalkeeper who had previously seemed impenetrable.

The second goal from Kane proved to be the decisive moment. He received the ball again from Gordon, took a touch to bypass defenders, and unleashed a shot with such force that it was deemed unsaveable by any goalkeeper. DR Congo‘s coach acknowledged Kane‘s exceptional talent, stating that it took the best striker in the world to defeat their team. Gordon, who provided both assists, praised Kane‘s consistent high-level performance, comparing his season to that of Lionel Messi.

VAR Controversies and Other Matchday Action

The match was not without its controversies, particularly regarding the use of VAR. Several incidents drew criticism, with many questioning the decisions made. One notable instance involved Harry Kane being denied a penalty, which a VAR review from one broadcaster indicated should have been awarded. The referee’s decision not to even send it for review was highlighted as particularly glaring.

Another contentious moment occurred in the match between Belgium and an unnamed opponent, where Belgium was awarded a penalty in the 125th minute. Reports suggested that the initial contact for this penalty might have occurred outside the box. Additionally, a red card shown to Balogun was also met with skepticism. The on-field referee initially did not issue a red card, but a subsequent VAR review led to the decision. This situation sparked debate about the nature of the foul, described as accidental or reckless rather than violent or malicious, and the bureaucratic rules surrounding VAR decisions.

Beyond England‘s victory, other matches also saw significant developments. Belgium‘s ‘Golden Generation’ staged a remarkable comeback, recovering from a two-goal deficit to score the latest goal in World Cup extra-time history in the 125th minute from a penalty. Meanwhile, the US team, despite receiving a red card, managed to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, with Tillman scoring a free-kick to secure their win.

By Aarav Reddy — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

England secured their progression in the World Cup after a challenging encounter against DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane delivering a match-winning brace. The victory, which saw England come from behind, was marked by Kane’s record-breaking performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The match saw DR Congo take an early lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga, maintaining their advantage deep into the second half. Despite Thomas Tuchel‘s side dominating possession and territory, they initially struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.

The breakthrough for England arrived in the 75th minute. Substitute Anthony Gordon provided a cross from the left flank, which Harry Kane met with a header, levelling the score. This goal was historically significant, bringing Kane’s World Cup tally to 12 goals, matching Pelé‘s record.

Kane was not finished, as England continued to press for a winner. In the 86th minute, Gordon again played a crucial role, delivering another dangerous ball into the penalty area. Kane reacted quickly, finding space to fire a powerful shot into the top-right corner, completing England‘s comeback and securing a 2-1 victory.

This second goal moved Kane to 13 career World Cup goals, surpassing Pelé on the tournament’s all-time scoring list. In a span of 11 minutes, he equalled and then surpassed one of football’s most celebrated goalscorers.

Kane’s Record-Breaking Achievements

Kane’s two goals against DR Congo also elevated his personal tally to five goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, placing him alongside Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot standings. Only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, both with six goals, are currently ahead in the race for the tournament’s leading scorer.

The brace also had a significant impact on England‘s World Cup history. Kane’s equaliser and winner brought his career knockout-stage goal count to five, moving him past Sir Geoff Hurst, whose four knockout goals were a highlight of England‘s 1966 World Cup triumph.

Currently, only Gary Lineker, with six World Cup knockout goals, remains ahead of Kane on England‘s all-time list. This leaves Kane just one goal shy of matching another historic national record as England prepares for the Round of 16.

Beyond his World Cup achievements, Kane’s international career continues to grow. He has now scored 20 goals in major international tournaments for England, comprising 13 goals at the FIFA World Cup and seven at the UEFA European Championship. He holds the record as England‘s all-time leading men’s goalscorer with 84 goals in 117 international appearances, and also holds the outright record for the most goals scored by an England player at major tournaments.

Kane first made his mark as a World Cup goalscorer by winning the Golden Boot at Russia 2018, where he scored six goals as England reached the semi-finals. His recent brace means he now has five goals in the current tournament, just one short of his personal best.

The match against DR Congo also marked Kane’s 15th World Cup start, making him the most-capped England men’s outfield player in World Cup starts. His performance earned him the Superior Player of the Match award for his pivotal role in bringing England back from the brink of elimination.

Looking Ahead to Mexico

Despite the heroics of DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who made several saves to deny Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford, England ultimately prevailed. Mpasi’s performance was noted as outstanding, even though his team narrowly lost and is now heading home.

The World Cup has seen various tactical approaches, moving away from a singular style. Teams like Paraguay have showcased a more traditional 4-4-2 formation with tough tackling, reminiscent of the 1970s, demonstrating a passion that some European teams might lack.

The tournament has also highlighted different goalkeeping performances. While some keepers like Mike Maignon of France have had relatively quiet matches with clean sheets, others like Cape Verde‘s 40-year-old Vozinha and Paraguay‘s Orlando Gill have delivered exceptional performances under significant pressure.

England‘s World Cup journey continues with a Round of 16 match against co-hosts Mexico. This upcoming fixture will present new challenges, including the heat and altitude of Mexico, and the experience of playing as the away team.

The World Cup continues to deliver classic matches, with the knockout phase bringing increased intensity. Teams like Japan, DR Congo, and Paraguay have pushed more established football nations, indicating a potential shift in the tournament’s dynamics.

The next match for England is against Mexico in the Round of 16.

By Aarav Reddy — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

Bayern Munich has completed the signing of Ismael Saibari, the Morocco international attacking midfielder. Saibari joins the German club after a six-year period with PSV Eindhoven, where he progressed through their ranks to become a key first-team player.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who has signed a five-year deal with Bayern Munich, was born in Spain and raised in Belgium. He is known for his blend of attacking drive, physical power, and technical quality. His playing style has been compared to that of Jude Bellingham, highlighting his ability to carry the ball through midfield, utilise his athleticism, dribbling, and strength to break defensive lines, and make late runs into the penalty area to create or take scoring opportunities. Saibari’s versatility also allows him to operate as a box-to-box midfielder, an advanced playmaker, or even a false nine.

During his time at PSV Eindhoven, Saibari moved from PSV Jong in the Dutch second tier to an indispensable role in the senior squad. He was recognised with the 2026 Eredivisie Player of the Year award. Saibari contributed to PSV winning three consecutive league titles between 2023 and 2026, achieving double-digit combined goals and assists in each of those campaigns.

International Impact and Personal Journey

Saibari’s strong club performances have translated to success on the international stage with Morocco. He scored three goals during Morocco’s FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage campaign, bringing his international goal tally to 12. He also converted the decisive penalty in a shootout victory against the Netherlands, which secured Morocco’s progression to the last 16 of the tournament.

A particularly poignant moment occurred after Morocco secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. Saibari sprinted towards the stands at the Estadio Monterrey in Mexico to embrace his mother, who was visibly emotional. This moment, captured and widely shared on social media, resonated with many due to Saibari’s personal history.

Saibari was born with a congenital foot deformity that made walking difficult in his early years. He required a brace-like device to stand and move, and doctors had expressed concerns to his parents that he might never walk properly. Saibari himself recalled in a 2024 interview that his feet were significantly turned inward, necessitating the use of a machine. He did not take his first steps until he was two years old. His mother’s primary wish was for him to have a normal life, rather than specifically becoming a football player. He expressed gratitude for now having normal, healthy feet and a body.

The family’s journey also involved significant moves. Saibari started playing football with local youth teams in Terrassa, Spain. However, the 2007 financial crisis impacted his family, leading them to relocate to Belgium when Saibari was six years old. His father, a goods transporter, feared losing his job, and his mother’s shop alone could not sustain the family.

Tributes and Future Expectations

Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund commented on Saibari’s arrival, highlighting his versatility, high intensity, and bold playing style. Freund noted Saibari’s hunger, goal-scoring ability, and mentality as valuable assets for the team, suggesting that players like him are a draw for fans.

PSV head coach Peter Bosz described Saibari as a special person and player, praising his ability to consistently get into scoring positions and combine this with high efficiency. Former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui also spoke positively about Saibari, characterising him as disciplined, punctual, and a dedicated professional who trains hard and makes sacrifices.

Saibari wears the No.34 shirt at club level as a tribute to Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri, a former Ajax midfielder whose career ended prematurely due to a cardiac arrest during a 2017 friendly match, resulting in severe brain damage. Morocco is scheduled to face Canada in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on July 4.

Historic Victory at Azteca Stadium

Mexico secured a significant World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium. This win marks the first time Mexico has advanced past the knockout stage since 1986, breaking a four-decade-long drought. The match, which saw goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez in the first half, was delayed by an hour due to an electric storm.

The atmosphere in the Azteca was described as roaring and pulsating, providing an epic backdrop for Mexico’s performance. Coach Javier Aguirre, who had overseen two previous early exits in 2002 and 2010, expressed the personal significance of this victory, stating that no other win compared to this one at home with their own people. Mexico’s success in this match means they will face the winner of the England versus Democratic Republic of the Congo match in the last-16 tie.

Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, followed by Jiménez’s goal in the 31st minute. This marked Quiñones’s third goal of the tournament, making him the second-best scorer for El Tri in World Cup history. Jiménez’s goal was his second of the tournament, bringing his national team tally to 47, surpassing Jared Borgetti.

Erik Lira, Jorge Sánchez and Jesús Gallardo of Mexico celebrate after Mexico’s last-32 win over Ecuador in Mexico City.Photograph: MB Media/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

The team’s performance was particularly notable in the first half, with Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old player, delivering an impressive display from midfield. His quick feet and strategic play were instrumental in Mexico’s attacking movements. Despite the weather delay, the extended wait seemed to heighten the anticipation for the match.

Travel Challenges and Fair Play Concerns

The match was not without its controversies, as Ecuador lodged a formal complaint regarding significant travel delays. Their journey to Mexico City, which was expected to take just over three hours, extended to nine hours. This delay, caused by an unspecified reason, led to concerns about fair play and equity in the tournament.

According to Julio Caballero, a physiotherapist and doctor in Biomedicine and Health Sciences, such travel conditions can significantly impact a team’s performance. He highlighted that travel fatigue, including prolonged sitting, disrupted routines, and accumulated physical and mental stress, can affect players’ recovery and readiness for high-intensity matches. This issue is particularly relevant in a World Cup spread across multiple countries, where long flights are often necessary.

Caballero explained that while travel does not directly cause injuries, it can reduce a player’s capacity to tolerate the demands of a match. He noted that non-contact muscle injuries, particularly in the hamstrings, triceps surae complex, quadriceps, and adductors, are a concern in such contexts. These are areas heavily strained in footballers undergoing intense efforts with incomplete recovery.

Mexico celebrate after the full-time whistle.Photograph: José Méndez/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

Medical teams employ various strategies to mitigate the impact of travel, focusing on pre-flight activation, avoiding immobility during flights, ensuring adequate hydration, and sometimes using compression garments. Caballero emphasized that in this World Cup, travel is no longer a mere transfer but an integral part of competition and match preparation.

Mexico’s Unbeaten Run Continues

With this victory, Mexico extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games, a run that began after a friendly loss against Paraguay in November. The team also achieved a historical milestone by becoming the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a CONMEBOL side in a World Cup knockout match, overturning a trend where South American teams had won the previous five such encounters.

Playing at the iconic Azteca Stadium, Mexico maintains an undefeated record across 10 World Cup matches at the venue. Their last official loss at the stadium was a World Cup qualifying defeat to Honduras on September 6, 2013. The match on July 1, 2026, was the second of the tournament to be affected by weather, following a storm during the France–Iraq match in Philadelphia on June 22.

Jiménez strikes to put Mexico two up.Photograph: David Ramos/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Ecuador, who had previously shown promise by overhauling Germany, was attempting to reach the round of 16 for only the second time in their history, with their last appearance being in Germany 2006. The team’s preparation was reportedly affected by Mexican fans outside their hotel, leading to a complaint lodged with FIFA.

France secures dominant victory against Sweden

France delivered a commanding performance against Sweden in the World Cup round of 32, securing a 3-0 victory. The match, held at the New York-New Jersey stadium, saw Kylian Mbappé score two goals, bringing his total for the tournament to six, level with Lionel Messi in the golden boot race. This win maintains France’s perfect record of four wins from four matches in the tournament.

The French side demonstrated their attacking prowess throughout the game, with their quality of play and the beauty of their goals leaving a lasting impression. Michael Olise was a key figure, contributing two assists and delivering a performance that drew considerable attention. France’s dominance was evident in their control of possession and numerous shots on goal against a Swedish team that struggled to create opportunities.

Key moments and goal scorers

The first half presented an interesting contest, with Sweden attempting to compete and employing a clear game plan. They looked to utilize counterattacks, often involving Anthony Elanga or long balls to Viktor Gyökeres, who would then look for Alexander Isak. However, despite two early releases for Isak within the first 25 minutes, his efforts were contained by Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, posing no threat to goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

France initially faced a compact and resilient Swedish defense. Despite numerous deft approaches, they struggled to break through, leading Mbappé to attempt long-range shots out of frustration. The turning point arrived around the half-hour mark, following a forceful drive from Adrian Rabiot that Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström managed to turn around the post. This moment ignited a succession of French opportunities.

Mbappé had a shot go over and another hit the post from close range. Olise then executed a perfect scissor kick that also struck Zetterström’s right post, with Ousmane Dembelé‘s follow-up going over the bar. Olise later had a shot from 20 yards out saved for a corner. The opening goal came from this corner, taken short by Dembelé to Olise, who returned the pass. Dembelé then quickly played it to Mbappé just inside the box on the right side. Despite a difficult angle and numerous defenders, Mbappé skillfully bent a shot past Zetterström, breaking the deadlock just before half-time.

The second goal for France came eight minutes into the second half. After Sweden briefly gained possession, Aurelién Tchouaméni seized the ball and passed it to Olise. Olise then delivered a precise pass between the Swedish center-half and full-back, perfectly weighted for Bradley Barcola, who advanced into the box and powerfully struck the ball into the net. This goal further solidified France’s lead.

France’s Bradley Barcola thumps home their second goal.Photograph: John Sibley Credit: theguardian.com

Olise continued his influential performance, drifting across the forward line, dropping deep, and making runs, constantly seeking the ball to create danger. Around the hour mark, he forced a sprawling save from Zetterström with another shot from outside the box. His passing ability was also on display, notably in a mesmerizing passing triangle with Rabiot and Jules Koundé at the halfway line, showcasing intricate short passes.

Mbappé secured his second goal of the match, and France’s third, with 15 minutes remaining. Olise provided another exquisite pass, setting up Mbappé for a perfectly timed run and a repeat finish, curling the ball into the far side of the goal. This goal sealed a convincing victory for France.

Kylian Mbappé celebrates after slotting home France’s third goal in a dominant display.Photograph: Al Bello/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Looking ahead to the last 16

With this victory, France has advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup. They are set to face Paraguay in their next match, which will be played on Saturday in Philadelphia. This will be a repeat of their 1998 World Cup last-16 encounter, which France won with a golden goal in extra time.

Didier Deschamps, who captained France to their 1998 World Cup victory and coached them to glory in 2018, is set to step down at the end of this competition after 14 successful years in charge. This strong performance ensures his tenure continues beyond the round of 32. Mbappé’s two goals in this match bring his total World Cup goals to 18, placing him just one behind Messi’s overall record of 19.

Norway secures victory in Dallas

Norway has advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in a thrilling match at Dallas Stadium. The decisive goal came late in the game from Erling Haaland, sending the Norwegian side through and eliminating their opponents.

The match saw Norway open the scoring in the first half, but Ivory Coast managed to equalize with a notable goal in the second half. Ultimately, it was Haaland who secured the crucial final goal, marking his fifth goal of the tournament.

First half action and Norwegian breakthrough

The initial stages of the match saw Norway struggling to find their rhythm, with too many square passes and a failure to involve key player Erling Haaland. This allowed Ivory Coast, also known as Les Éléphants, to gain confidence and control much of the early play. Norway’s defense was frequently tested, attempting to repel a series of attacks as their midfield offered limited protection.

Despite being largely on the back foot for the opening half-hour, Norway broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Antonio Nusa collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and struck it powerfully, sending it into the top-right corner of the net. This goal came somewhat against the run of play, as Norway had been chasing the game for much of the initial period before starting to assert themselves just prior to Nusa’s effort.

Shortly after their goal, Norway nearly extended their lead. Haaland had a sight of goal in the 36th minute after Alexander Sorloth delivered a cross from the right, but the striker’s header lacked its usual power and was comfortably gathered by Yahia Fofana. Minutes later, Haaland had another close-range shot that was blocked, leading to a corner kick, though he was unable to connect with the subsequent delivery. Norway maintained their 1-0 lead going into halftime, having gained momentum after their goal.

Second half drama and late winner

The second half commenced with an open style of play, providing both teams with opportunities to score. A significant chance for Norway arose from a corner kick, where Torbjørn Heggem‘s close-range shot appeared destined for the net. However, Ivory Coast midfielder Amad Diallo, who had just been introduced into the game, was positioned on the goal line and managed to clear the ball.

During the second-half hydration break, Norway made some defensive substitutions, seemingly aiming to protect their lead. However, this strategy did not prevent Ivory Coast from equalizing shortly thereafter. Diallo, a Manchester United player, executed a quick one-two pass with Nicolas Pépé outside the box. He then received the return pass, dribbled past Moller Wolfe and Sander Berge, and fired a left-footed shot that bounced off the turf and over Ørjan Nyland, finding the bottom-left corner of the net. This brought the score level with at least a quarter of an hour remaining in the match.

As the game entered its final minutes, Erling Haaland once again proved decisive. The winning move originated on the Norwegian right flank, with Patrick Berg receiving an exquisite through ball. Berg then delivered a cross into the middle of the box, where Haaland was positioned with an open net. He took a soft touch, which appeared almost like an attempt to control the ball, and it scooted over the line, giving Norway a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute. This late goal ultimately broke the hearts of the Ivorian team, whose defense watched in dismay.

Ivory Coast continued to press for an equalizer in the dying minutes, attempting to force extra time. Diallo, who had already scored, unleashed a stinging free-kick that was acrobatically tipped out by the watchful Norwegian goalkeeper, Ørjan Nyland. Despite these late efforts, Norway held on for the victory. The Norwegian fans, who had been rowing in unison throughout the celebrations, joined their players in a collective act of rowing after the final whistle, reflecting the team’s unified effort.

Norway’s triumph sets up a highly anticipated encounter with five-time World Cup champion Brazil in New York on July 5.
